Number two on the big list of things that give it that certain feeling would be how you include a bunch of friends whose only real purpose is to constantly talk about your character, provide exposition about her, and generally come off as if their wallflower friend is the center of their existence. If you're writing scenes with a group the group should have a dynamic and, in a more freeform game like this, ideally have their own content. Think of Anno and Kaede: Kaede doesn't just exist to tell you things about Anno or hype her up, she exists as her own person and has her own scenes as well as a dynamic with Anno that isn't just "constantly agreeable and supportive". She also has her own scenes. If you're writing for a game like this where almost everyone can be fucked you have to consider a player who doesn't like your precious but finds one of your tertiary characters interesting. If you don't want to write scenes where they're more than someone who jerks off your baby then do you really need them? Should three be combined into two or one? Should they be cut?

Get a better example. Anno and kaede are the worst example of 'just friends' characters. Hell, a better comparison would be Sera and the white rahn, and/or Fix, the cat boy from the party; both are side characters that support a more 'main' characer, but don't have tens of thousands of words focused on them.

Edit: Also, saying characters aren't needed if they don't fuck the PC/have more expansive content is stupid. That would make world building impossible as no one would have friends, they'd all be lovers or fuckbuddies, and no one would have preferences. Sorry, but not every character with a name is going to want to fuck Steele.

I do think though, if you're introducing a character with enough content to warrant a name, you need a pretty good excuse for why you can't fuck them. To not do that is to misunderstand the intention of this game. Which, indeed, is the exact criticism levelled at the Fisi content (and I will happily extend that to Embry too, so Lucky doesn't feel targeted).

And the toughest thing to learn isn't avoiding common pitfalls but how to be your own harshest destructive critic - because you also need to be your own editor and the editor in you needs to be able to say "I don't care how much you like this part, it adds nothing and it needs to go" or "this has been done a million times before, scrap it and take it in a new direction".

Without wishing to delve into pop psychology too much, I understand exactly why, despite being a decent writer and having three hours spare to construct messages like this, you yourself have never produced anything for this game. Because if everyone had this attitude, no content would ever have been produced for TiTS. We're all amateur writers here, and none of us is producing Atwood, and more importantly we don't need to produce Atwood, just competent prose that understands its goal. And actually our goal is to do something that's been done a million times before, our audience wants what young adult humans have always wanted. If we all sat here frowning at our screens saying 'well frankly, this introduction to the bit where you fuck the furry shemale is both trite and unconvincing, ima scrap this for the third time this week and try a different angle', we wouldn't be the most successful written porno game going.

Thermic understood all of this better than anyone, and I still think he was the best writer TiTS ever had.

It should hurt a little. No, it should hurt a lot.
That's a ridiculous position.

Yes, putting out your work is running a risk of harsh criticism, but I strongly disagree that it justifies any and all harsh off-handed remarks, like your initial description of Fisianna. All I had to say to that part of that particular post was: fuck you, buddy, let me see you do better.

Moreover, I highly doubt that it's the effective way to go about it *if* you want to see the author improve instead of just lording your supposedely superior writing/editing peenor over them.

The post I quote rn does contain a number of valid points, but again, why did you decide that a *public* discection of the character was necessary. Anger and hurt have an equally high chance of turning someone from this hobby, one that they should first and foremost enjoy, so they can deliver their work to others.

Lastly, Lucky has announced on several occassions that he plans to expand in a major way the possible interactions between PC and Fisi's friends. And the fact that they ahd been initially left out has just as much to do with the way TiTs' content pipe worked at the time as it does with this being (IIRC) his first ever creative work.

P.S.

Favorites: Prai, Fisianna, Tlako, Embry, Syri, Reaha, Nayna and Sera stand out to me in terms of romance and tenderness.
Colenso, Geoff, Shekka, Kaede and Anno in terms of friendships or potential friendships to my PC.

Least favorite: I love to hate on Beth Carver and her accomplices because of how personal the characters like Reaha and Del make the hurt we see her inflict. I'm not sure if it means she qualifies as my least favorite character.

That's about it.

Badger became tolerable when her content was expanded with a more clear warning, a way to bust her ass, and something she is useful for outside of bimbofication.

Pretty much agreed. Sometimes I think about giving criticism that hurts, but in the end I don't think I ever have. Not only am I running the risk of my advice not being great - I think I'm a good author, but it's not like I'm omniscient or anywhere close to it - but fuck, what if I'd torn apart, for instance, Fisianna? Then it's highly likely the project never would have finished at all, and I know for a fucking FACT there are plenty of people who love that character who would have lost out. So what was really the best path there? I'm left thinking that I'm in the right to shut up and let people do what they want. If it's shit, the staff will toss it. I'd rather have the content in the game and the newer writers not being sad about having a more senior writer ripping up their cute concepts for their perceived flaws. I'm not an editor, we don't get paid for this shit (technically some of us do but you get what I mean).

I think about this a lot actually, as it's currently extremely relevant when I'm working with both the TiTS and the CoC2 teams. At the end of the day my stance is that I'll mind my own business and the other authors will either put up or fade away. Nobody wins if I come out swinging my literary dick around.

On a related note to NS' point about "prose that understands its goal", I think I've been writing with the same goal ever since I started: to invoke the same eagerness I had about the scenes in CoC when I first found it. Not exactly high art but if at any point you can get your dick out to what I've written my job is done, especially wrt commissions.

As for my favourite characters, I don't even really know. I'm so far behind in TiTS gameplay I don't think I've seen any of the content post-2016 unless I wrote it myself. I like the whorehouse content and the associated bad end.
Least favourite, likewise. Maybe the goo girls, I find goo incredibly boring just as a concept.

It might be just me, but I don't need the game explicitly telling me that x characters are out of reach. If they aren't, tough luck. Then again, I don't always play the game for the smut and some people are fond of paladin runs.

why did you decide that a *public* discection of the character was necessary.
Perhaps he did because this could be the right thread to do it, especially when writers won't allow anything on their personal threads other than constructive critique, cat image macros or the classic "YESS YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT MY FAVE KINKS :gizz:" message.
Sometimes, people just want to say "I like/don't like [character] because of this or that" or rant instead of suggesting ideas or writing their own since not everyone wiil be good with writing/can commission a writer. And if it doesn't suffice, I'll start my long-delayed "I Played X's Contents and I Just Want to Discuss Them in a Light But Candid Way" thread for those who just want to talk about game contents without wishing for a change in them.

At the end of the day my stance is that I'll mind my own business and the other authors will either put up or fade away. Nobody wins if I come out swinging my literary dick around.
Though I don't fully agree with this, I know where you're coming from and see why it'd be a sensible guideline to follow. But since this is a forum, I very much prefer it when both regular users and experienced writers can weight in - always in a civil way.

Top of my head Favorites: Syri,Fisi, and Chrissy cause I luvs me some vidja games / Azra, Mirrin, and Emmy cause you gotta work for that booty

Least Fav: I don't think I have one really. My brain lacks that thing to take anything bad seriously, but If I had to guess it be me.

Because I accidentally glassed/nuked a planet, subjugated an entire kingdom, and go planet hopping fucking and impregnating anything that tries to fight me. Just to find a probe and a new planet to start the cycle anew. So yeah in the grand scheme of things Imma dick

I saw this thread yesterday evening, wrote a post and then deleted it without sending it. Now I'm, again, writing a post. What can I say?

I'm an idiot. And I know, I am.

Maybe because of that I don't understand why people dislike Fisianna.

I remember her as VERY cutesy. And cliched. She has this naive/too perfect feel to her that fanfictions sometimes have. Does that make her a bad character?

I think of her as "extreme content". Content that goes very far into a specific direction, but let's you know beforehand what you are getting yourself into. It's not for everyone, but you know where you're headed to.

In terms of scope and general execution, I think Lucky did a really good job with her.

---

Out of the named and permanent characters I especially like:

Jerynn, Lane, Queen of the Deep, Taivra, Saendra, Sera, Syri, the Wetraxxel

As for characters I like the least, I could not tell you.
I have lots of characters I'm disinterested in, and some character interactions I find questionable (Riya, Badger) but I can honestly say that I dislike none. If I don't like it, I just leave it. That leaves me with no specific characters to mention here.

This is why I constantly ask for (constructive) criticism and feedback while I am in the process of writing so I can hopefully avoid some common pitfalls. Yes, I'm an amateur as fuck writer, and am trying to improve. Yes, she was my first EVER time writing any sort of fictional material. I've SAID this MULTIPLE times, thanks for painfully pointing that out. I can take a tip, and a suggestion or two for ways to improve on writing and character concept, but there's no need to be so damn condescending either with the last part. That just pisses me off more than anything.

For thread continuity...
Favorites: Hard to say, but usually characters that I have to work to love, like Emmy, or Reaha are tops for me.

Least Favorite: I... don't have a least favorite per say, but I kinda dislike most characters with an asshole-dom trope. (Sorry, I'm a hopeless romantic at heart...)
I do like characters with romance focus, and ones that you actually have to work to get with, plus you clearly spent a lot of time working on her. However a lot of her plot points feel straight out of a highschool romance, which isn't inherently bad but they largely ignore the fact that you are a badass space explorer which is really out of sync with everything else and seems to place her content in world where everything revolves around her separate from the rest of the game.

@balitz Method Was overly harsh because you aren't a bad writer and show a lot of potential but I definitely understand where he's coming from especially with certain elements of her backstory and her friends though not so much with him thinking everyone should be all about sex all the time.

...but because you need to be harsh enough with yourself to overcome feelings of sunk cost (I spent three hours writing this so I -need- to keep it in) so you can cut something that needs to be cut without losing your motivation.

That's what's meant when people say less is more:

Right around here is when you should have realized the irony.

Characters I like because fetishes: Shekka and Inessa. Shekka is a shortstack engineer and Inessa is submissive fairy-like creature. I also like that you have to put in time and effort (mostly time for Inessa) to get all of their content. I kinda wish we could get Inessa on our ship. Grab Inessa, Reaha (milk vendor mode), Sera (merchant mode), Anno, and Shekka. Have a mobile merchant ship that makes money on our way to claim the Steele fortune. I like money, so if I can put some businesses in my business to make money while I make money, I'm happy.

Characters I like for pure reasons: Aurora and Colenso. Aurora is a cute little space nerd that I'd want to adopt if my ship were child friendly and I hope someone writes us finding her people for her. Colenso is Alex Jones in space, and the interaction between him and a Kind Steele after his quest is one of the best things in game imo. The advice given to Colenso, the way he took it, and the resolution of the quest all works well with a character I already like. Also, he's right about the true Steele: Celise is the real one, you're nothing but a replica. They're putting chemicals in the water that turn theKerokorasgaywehavetobreaktheconditio-

I still kinda dislike Badger. I used to hate Badger, but there are now options for dealing with her, and she's placed out of the way, making it easy to ignore her if I don't want her goods/Plexiga help. Honestly, if it weren't for the bad first impression of the character, I wouldn't dislike her at all, for the reasons I no longer hate her. Displeasing characters are, in my opinion, fine, so long as you have ways of dealing with them and/or avoiding them. The other character I somewhat dislike is the Jackal one, but her flavor text is easily ignored in the sea of others at bars, and there's little issue with ignoring the ass at a bar in favor of dealing someone better. As a result, I don't REALLY dislike the character, so much as it's just not to my taste.

On the other hand, I hate Riya. You can't actually do anything about her, she's noticeably there when I try to go between Lerris and Inessa making her harder to ignore, and she's a character I find repugnant. I hate the character a lot less if it was in it's own corner like the Acquisitions office or lost in a sea of people at a bar. But it's own noticeable panel coupled with a character you can't do anything about? It's a forced TF away from being worse than Old Badger. I'll back off here, though, since threads can easily devolve into chaos over things like Riya and old Badger before her, and this thread already seems to be dangling over one precipice. No need for another. Actually, I just put my dislikes in a spoiler. No one clicks those, right?

It should hurt a little. No, it should hurt a lot.

No it shouldn't, because it's constructive criticism. You can say opinions on a specific piece here and there, bring up observations that you've made that might help other projects down the line but you have no right to come onto a forum and be a clown to someone while thinking you're high and mighty.

You could have settled with, "I don't think the character's dialog is terribly realistic, it reeks a bit to much of dating sim tropes" or something to that degree. Here you've gone and thrown down a lengthy epic towards the author instead, all the while thinking you're the second coming of literacy Jesus.

No, fuck that. Heck, on a fundamental level your points re:setting etc are to be levied on Fenoxo (or whoever approved the character back in staffhaus, I can't be assed to look it up) and certainly not them.

Perhaps he did because this could be the right thread to do it, especially when writers won't allow anything on their personal threads other than constructive critique, cat image macros or the classic "YESS YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT MY FAVE KINKS :gizz:" message.

Good thing people don't get to police their own threads. Also; PMs exist, besides.

I'm glad I stayed outta this thread.

Brings me back to my original post on the first page. It's going exactly like I thought it would go...

Post better.

Continue.

Sera hating furries
I don't really think she hates furries, per se. Judging from her dialouge, I think she actually hates amateur modders who think they are special even though they just took a few cheap pre-made mods, as opposed to Sera who spent so much time, money, and effort getting the way she is that she actually got herself into dept, and she's just taking it out on the subculture as a whole.

That and the fact that shes super salty about Jade giving her some serious competition, despite Jades lax business attitude.

Judging by the Great Walls of Text and Salt up above, I think it's safe to say this thread was a mistake. I should know! I made a thread like this a while back, and even I fell victim to the salt!

YES!!!

Yes. Being an awful person doesn't make someone an awful character, and it's good that not every NPC is likeable.
The other character I somewhat dislike is the Jackal one, but her flavor text is easily ignored in the sea of others at bars, and there's little issue with ignoring the ass at a bar in favor of dealing someone better. Who?
On the other hand, I hate Riya.
I put that with my other statement, and even though I do hate the cunt, I suppose it's fair that we're not able to do anything about her.
Actually, I just put my dislikes in a spoiler. No one clicks those, right?

Holy carp, I hope I did that right and don't have to edit this mess...

If is about what happened on my expac content thread a few months back, the reason I reacted the way I did to you was that you pretty much gave me essentially the same grating feedback as ballitz did then, which wasn't helping me at all. I don't mind negative criticism on my threads, as long as you give me a way I can improve on that aspect, instead of just telling me, "Oh, this shouldn't be the way you do something," with the occasional off-handed remark, and then leaving me hanging with no recommendations to fix my wrongdoing that I can be mindful of in the future. Without that, most "criticisms" in that regard just comes off as insults to the creator. I for one would certainly welcome feedback that can help me build forward otherwise.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of feedback I've really been looking get on Fisianna, pointing out the positives as well as the negatives from a character developmental standpoint, but most importantly, leaving me tips on how I can improve the character for the future as well with the content that's already in place! I'll definitely save this piece of critique on a doc moving forward with her future expacs as well as future characters and go from there. You've done me a great service, and now I can clearly see some of the hang-ups some people have been having, and try to fix and attempt to tone down some of those negative aspects.

Also yeesh, I really didn't want this thread blowing up over one piece of questionable feedback, moreso over one of my characters. Yeah, I was more than angry with ballitz's rather callous overview of Fisi, though I'm thankful to the other writers and a few others for helping to clear things up for me, and I'll take this knowledge with me to hopefully improve on my writing from hereon. I'm more than appreciative of the support, and would just simply like to take any more feedback either on my thread, or a PM to let the thread continue on its normal course.

No, it's not. I was typing in a general sense. I do not hold grudges against people as we all have bad days from time to time. Plus, as Ted said, PMs exist for a reason. Now, and as I said back then, critizising and giving opinions are two different things, and the former needs time to be brewed, something people might not have. That, and what I said about writers feeling okay with capslock attacks and memes :p

Favorites: Anno, Syri, Fisi (I'm a sucker for romance and friendship), Kally, Terensha (When can we get more scenes with her or as a crew member)

Dislike: Doctor Badger, Rival (Could have been a better villain, too generic and uninteresting)

Don't be too salty on the thread, it's only opinions

Dude, when she's your sub she gives you some form of sass when you ask her about furries while being one or a taur. Then when you are her sub and a furry she mentions that it's okay that you look like a mascot at an amusement park or something making an exception of you if you're a furry but her sub.

Also the wiki says it.

"She has a deep hatred of furries not only because Jade's store is making her business more difficult, but also because she looks down on them for wanting to be so animal-like"

Ok, probably gonna revamp my earlier choices with some more clear choices (albiet I haven't played TiTS in a while so I definitely might be missing some of the new ones)

My absolute favs are probably tied between Paige and Ula. Paige to me comes off as a super interesting character. I love her gentle mannerisms when you have a convo with her, and her sex scenes are really well done and hot! She can definitely take just as hard as she gives out! Ula because she's a smol bundle of floof that's always a treat, and her naivete is a pretty big bonus to me! Honorary mentions are Sylvie and Kelly. They both might not be quite waifu material, but they seem ultra fun people to hang with, and have a casual fuck session or two! Kelly would prolly be one of my top favs if it weren't for the large equipment she was carrying.

As for my least fav... probably Beth Carver, mainly for what she put poor Reaha through. The scene that you let Reaha explode at Carver was really satisfying. :p
