From the dev comments so far, ship upgrades are way more involved than just "buy the next bigger one". There was quite some customization planned, at least.

I'm not sure what you mean by "ship upgrade" - the current crew simply doesn't fit into the starter ship as it is described, no matter how much you upgrade it - there's just not enough space in there. You’ll need an entirely new ship, so you should be able to skip a few "steps" and just buy...
