Mercs still would get more from PA. Tech at level 10 would have 85 hp, merc 200 plus 50% from second wind - 300. 20% defence would barely make up for 235% difference in HP.

The major problem with shields is that you can't apply defence to them. You can protect your HP with armor, but not shield. And, since tech have very little HP, they are pretty much screwed once shields are breached.

Subminor update with a bit buffed adventurer class (notably more hp) and fixed it's perk tree (note, it is a placeholder anyways).

True problem of tech is not even lack of force, but lack of energy. Techs have some decent combos, but lacks energy to use them consistently.

Well, mind control aspect is actually I'm not into. Sort of whing which is not... Honest. Being able to burn your foe to dust using power of your mind, from the other side... Never was into scalies (even if Arian is one of my favs, it's from personality). But my foxes always had few dragon...
