remember though beth and kat are evil and do not play fair so ether way this will not go down simply for ether of us. going by what you just said we just stole a lot of her product and ruined her plans. it will end in a fight of some sort or the creation of a recurring enemy if were stupid and don't finish her off. theirs no peace with someone like them, were rather with them or agents them.
plus i just added the we get a brothel as a joke. we wouldnt get it, it would defiantly go to travails (didn't spell her name right, the goo girl) she would be a significantly better mistress then us. while eden would probably take over the cathouse on tarkus. were way to sporadic to own a business

1) Beth and Kat are opportunists. They'll play the way that benefits them most - if fair play would have them get their way, they'd do it. Considering their operation flirts with illegality (since Beth doesn't technically sell slaves), they're bound to take all their options into account first. And while they're morally wrong, they're about on the same level of mafia drama protagonists at the most. Evil is a bit harsh here.

2) It doesn't have to end in them "being finished off" because the PC has at least two opportunities to befriend members of law enforcement that are pleasant and accessible to every player species (Penny and Sylvie) so finding a peaceful solution that still ends with the law being applied is possible if you can prove they're breaking the law in some form (which I think is a valid approach). There's no need for Steele to turn full vigilante. Furthermore, if your Steele was morally ambiguous and, say, not generally against the contracts Beth offers, a simple "live and let live" option would also have to be offered. If this is about resolving a conflict, a neutral option ought to exist if people want to headcanon that way.

3) Owning the business and running it are two different pairs of shoes. If, say, the building formally goes into Steele's possession, they can then do with it what they want - turn it into a brothel that complies with the law and appoint a Madam of their choosing to run it, gift it to the workers to do with as they please or make something else of the building entirely (for example, turning it into a less saucy establishment or having it as a new option for Zheniya if the PC is fine with her remaining a prostitute but, say, concerned about her safety/ or having her as an additional option for Madam).

4) Owning a small business would actually serve to hone Steele's business sense; the problem would of course be that some sort of management system would have to be implemented and I think it's fairly safe to say that Fenoxo and company would strangle whoever brings such an option up in their sleep. It's not that Steele is too busy in general, considering half the planets in existence are merry little detours on a meandering quest. If the PC wanted, they could manage everything via ExtraNet from their ship's cockpit.

Ooh, that would actually be pretty cool. You find hard evidence that they're breaking the law and either turn it in, don't get involved, or blackmail them for a cut.

Another option could be to introduce a weapon-crafter NPC. If Steele asks them about weapons, they could be sent on a short Quest to acquire items for the NPC to make them a new weapon... and maybe "negotiate" the price for their services.
You may get your wish for a weaponsmith, but so far as haggling goes you're gonna be SOL&JWF on this one.

Just as well, I'll save the idea of an NPC exorcising their fetishes on Steele as a means of haggling, for when I'm good enough that writing to make my own content.

Hmm... jolly well fucked.

What'd that look like? *[NPC] cums in Scottish*? I can't for the life of me grasp how to portray accents in writing properly, is what I'm saying.
Wazzat? Ya cannae e'en imagine a wee lil' accent?

Seriously though, the first thing that comes to mind is that scene from Ted where they talk about Minnesotan accents.

Yah see, I always think spelling accents out like that is weird. And it's just as weird to reference accents that don't really exist in a particular work of fiction (because, for instance, the setting makes it clear they speak languages far different from RL ones).

Ah carp, I didn't even think about the accents likely being extinct. Except for Texan and Canadian, I guess. But do humans use American or British English? I've been under the assumption of American. Will we get a Space Scotland or something?

I guess it'd be possible to have different accents if we'd assume that A) certain alien languages are translated by the codex with their general intonations intact so they come back as [PC Language] with accents and if B) generational ships heading away from Earth all those centuries ago were somehow composed of people from different continents and/or countries.

This is still suggesting other languages are entirely gone though, right? That would be sad, I think.

Wait, does Trials have translated versions for players who don't speak English?

I don't think so.

Let me put it this way: If a generational ship of primarily Korean humans set out to colonize a planet hundreds of years ago, that colony would nowadays (during the time the PC is alive) speak a then-modern version of Korean, so the language isn't extinct. If something like a stereotypical Texan accent can survive, an entire language should, too.

And no, I don't think so. I was more suggesting that there's plenty of room to pretend Steele themselves are speaking with an accent, or that what the codex translates alien languages into for Steele is necessarily English. Halfbreed Steeles might even be capable of speaking the alien parent's language and prefer the codex settings that way, is what I was trying to suggest.

Like a half-Leithan speaking Leithan, primarily, for example.

But isn't New Texas particularly special? If I recall, humans sent out tons of ships like that, but most failed, including the Nova on Tarkus. I'm sure there's a reintegration process to make sure everyone is back up to speed and governments can properly deal with paperwork and stuff. Do humans on Earth use translators for human languages? I'd rather learn, myself.

Does most space fiction go into detail on how government works? I have a need to know all of the things.

I think it depends on the space fiction. Something where politics plays into the plot is more likely to express how it works than something like TiTS where the dystopian future is just a backdrop for the most part.

Of course, Star Wars does the explaining, I think Star Trek and Babylon 5 do, too, and Firefly. Other than that, I don't think most of the really big ones go into much detail unless it's necessary.

Also, personally I like to think that while some ships actually didn't make the trip, others did and just didn't give Earth feedback at all. Considering most colonies went rogue before the gates opened (excluding Vesperia), there's no reason to assume other groups didn't start being separatists much earlier.

No, American English won the Great Linguistic War of 2107 and is now the only spoken language on Earth and her colonies. Regional accents still exist, especially among the colonies (which likely have their OWN accents but we just substitute in real-life ones where needed) and second-language speakers. In the event an ancient sleeper-ship or some such is discovered, the people who find them will have translators and be able to communicate flawlessly. Their descendants would likely just speak English in a couple generations if they didn't already -- and they almost certainly did to begin with.

Of course, alien species all have their own languages and there's work for non-automated translations between them. Syri mentions that she hates reading in English (despite being proficient in it) and prefers to read Human novels in hand-translated format.

I was thinking something more like the opening to Pygmalion.

So....the US somehow conquered Earth in its entirety and proceeded to treat everyone like they're Canadian Natives? Cheery.

man, and here I thought this game couldn't get any darker

This is like the darkest timeline, except sex everywhere

... Worth it, I think?

Ehhhhh, sex is a means of survival for most people who get too deep. It's also extremely easy to get too deep. Deviate from a rigid budget and spend a little too much on a mod then, well, shit son, you're the property of a corporation now.

Hold on a second. Just because AmE became a standard for pronounciation doesn't mean there aren't more varieties. I'd imagine there's AmE as the main dialect (i.e., the equivalent of RP in Britain), with other varieties of English (like Hong Kong or Singapore English, Jamaican English etc) constituting the remainder of the linguistic landscape.

Unless they actually went the forced naturalization way, then it's really over.

I did a search in the release archives and found out it's been over two years since Reaha was last mentioned. I'm sad about this.

I actually had to do a wiki search to find out who you were talking about, now that's how sad it is, She's been here since like the beginning

Holy shit.

Here's hoping she gets an x-pac soon that gives Steele more options if they didn't cure her all the way...
...not like I have a personal investment in that outcome cause I screwed up on that quest. Nope, no investment at all.

She's already relatively feature complete. I think its a mistake to perceive this lack of mention as lack of appetite or interest. She simply succeeds at presenting her content in a setting where vary few NPCs can rival her content quality and quantity. She does have some loose ends, but these are incredibly minor by Fengame standards.
