Your Gripes With CoC2

First and foremost: I don't mean to be rude with what I'm going to say, but I've been trying to figure out how to word this complaint for a good bit and it's difficult to put the words together without at least some of this coming out a little bit rough. Sorry.

I can echo the sentiment of many that I don't really like the fact that the corrupt hornet hive got the axe. I get it, though. It wasn't a popular route, and it completely stopped you from getting access to pretty significant chunks of content. Like a whole companion. That has knock-on effects for the rest of the game. But at the same time I still can't help but feel that with the removal of this content, something more has been lost. It's a weird and nebulous thing. I'll try and define it.

With CoC2 there are two kinds of content: The content that exists, and the content that could exist. I know that arguing a point like this is going to be akin to madness but it's the only way that I can think of to define things. Until this patch, while the corrupt hive was a completely dead-end route that wasn't popular, it existing within the game provided a platform for content to be built off of in the event that someone came around to write for it. But now with the removal of the existing content two things have happened: Firstly, anyone who did like the content has been deprived of it. Secondly, any potential future expansions to that content, be it with new scenes, new characters, new iterations, or more, now cannot exist, even if someone wanted to come along and write for it.

Taking a step back, a decision like that feels like it's going to have a long-lasting echo for the rest of the game. Now if something isn't popular enough it can just get cut, and that doesn't quite sit right with me. It took forever for the corrupt centaur village route to have Corrupt Ahmri appear, is it now under threat of being cut too, since it's not popular? I know that's a little extreme of an example, but it is something that crosses my mind.

The fact that an entire companion gets locked off by doing the corrupt route is probably one of the biggest reasons why the pure route is so popular. That's gameplay being taken away, after all. Same thing with having to sit down and churn through the orb content in order to get maximum tails Kiyoko as a companion. It's telling a story along with it, but that doesn't really stop the fact that the rest of the game gets put on hold while you cycle through the content if you want the best version of Kiyoko. It's honestly not fun, but you've gotta do it if you want to get the best outcome.

The solution to this unfortuantely lies in having more companions than you can recruit in the game. Something where there's around 15 people that you can recruit as a companion, but you can only ever have nine companions since that's the maximum number of room's at Garth's inn, or something. This lets people with a favorite NPC bring them along, even if some of those NPC's are shallower than others. This then loops back into content that exists vs content that could exist. If a less popular NPC got turned into a companion, like say Eryka (who honestly felt almost spoon fed to us that she was going to be a companion, and then that never happened), then they could suddenly have a whole lot of people willing to step up and provide scenes and expansions now that they know that this character isn't going to be forgotten in a tile that nobody's got a reason to enter more than once. (Which isn't entirely true in the case of Eryka since the church is a fast way to cleanse corruption but the point still largely stands.)

To try and put a finisher on this incoherent post: I get it. Sometimes needs must for the greater good, but it doesn't make me happy, and I'll bet that it's going to be a sore spot for quite some time.

Just found an issue don’t know if it’s known yet but I just tuned my character into a dragon and I pulled lyric out in public and now I’m soft locked because were in a public space or character isn’t libidinous enough

Hopefully the corrupt route gets a fix-up or some sort of alternative in the future. As someone who doesn't do pure routes at all, this update was just shit to read. So I do hope this gets changed down the line at some point, because the idea of being railroaded into pure routes just bugs me.

So here's the thing, right: we left that in there for I think seven years trying to tempt people who're in the Corruption content to write for it. Literally nobody did. I've tried to pay people to expand on it and couldn't get bites.

Similarly, basically nobody ever came around and said how much they liked that content, but loads of people complained about it, and pretty frequently.

Right now we're entering the stage where "maybe somebody will do this" has run out of time. I have people working on the final explorable area of the game at this very moment; now that I'm pretty much done with Act 2's MSQ I'm about to hard pivot to Tychris because that's been sandbagging multiple Companion questline resolutions for years. The review queue is so full that we probably won't clear it until 1.0 even if nothing else is ever submitted.

I 100% agree that it would be good if there was a Corrupt path through the hive (I am the one that insisted on adding what was there in the first place, despite Skow's [in hindsight correct] objections). What was there just proved to be unserviceable.

I think Love Knight Bimbo Azyrran could easily have still been a companion after being pushed into honey. Maybe a few extra steps or cajoling, but love knight is close enough to bimbo that most scenes with her would be fine. Just recruit her at the honey pool.
"Hey Azzy, you wanna stretch your legs and wings and give hugs and kisses to some meanies to make them all warm and buzzy too?"

Why is the onus for corruption on the outsiders/freelancers/community writers?

Yeah, but when a developer markets their project as a sequel to a game with corruption content, one would assume that the people making it are into corruption and all related kinks.

Seems a little unfair to expect outsiders to fill in. Especially for a game that, in retrospect, doesn't have many community/freelancers that constantly write for it to begin with, for whatever reason. Especially when compared to TiTs.

Yeah, but one could call it false advertising. I understand why people would be upset.
Like I said, I've tried finding people to do it!

When we started there were a bunch of people who were super into corruption who were involved in the game's design phase, and then all just disappeared!

Yeah, but they are still getting paid. At same time, though, only by people that are into the game as it is, so I do get what you are getting at.

Still, the game did gather interest in the beginning based on it being a sequel to OG CoC, and it still uses its name as an advertisement. So there will always be a crowd of people expecting that sort of stuff.

Have you tried marketing on forums? Like a bounty board?

We've had a Bounty Board since the game's inception available to community writers.

While the Hive in specific has never been on there, since it's a big story thing, you'll never guess what content has been sitting on there, unclaimed, for five years. (It's a bunch of demon stuff, and more corrupted Undermountain encounters.)

Hmmmm... People that are interested in getting paid for writing corruption probably wouldn't be interested in this game. And people that already write seem to be more into consensual content, so that is probably why it doesn't work.

If you offered some easier/less committal projects on the forums for anyone to try to pick up, maybe it could bait some potential writers into trying to take a crack at it. But than that could lead to you being flooded with half baked attempts and what not, so I understand why you only offer it to ones that already wrote for the game.

Yeah, that's fair and more than valid. I'd have taken a crack at things myself, but unfortunately circumstances beyond my control have been extremely effective at stealing all the time and energy that I'd like to use to sit down and be creative.

The game is free? I definitely paid for my game (and got my money's worth). Granted, I've probably spent days worth of hours posting typos and helping others with stuff. Actually, the only reason I even joined the boards was Savin's message asking for help with typos and editing on the game's main screen. And there were so many I decided to help and came here. Only to watch most posts sit for months if not longer without being addressed or anything (until Teawolf came along a bit later and took a dent out of them).

But I for sure paid for my game (and I don't get the early releases either).
