So, aparently, tumblr is going to be eliminating all NSFW content starting December 17. Why? I dont know. All that I know is that a fuckton of porn artists are now scrambling to create backup plans so they dont loose their source of income.

So, if you follow porn artists on tumblr, better get cracking!

I myself am following a little over one thousand people on there, 90% of them porn artists. So needless to say I'm going to be busy for a while.

Why? I dont know.

Dude.

Yahoo bought Tumblr for 1.1 billion. Verizon bought Yahoo for 4.4 billion. People want returns on investment.

How does tumblr make money?

Tumblr has four main sources of revenue – with sponsored posts making up the bulk of it. Tumblr’s sponsored posts look identical to normal Tumblr posts – except that they are highly targeted. A shampoo company, for example, might place an ad targeting young women who follow blogs about make-up or beauty supplies. This ad, called a stream ad, would appear on users’ dashboards and, as it is more or less indistinguishable from a regular post, is more likely to be clicked on than a sidebar ad. Stream ads also have the benefit of not being easily ignored.

tl;dr porn is not advertiser friendly

Their iOS app got removed from the appStore because they can't police CP (teenage girls posting nudes) well enough. So in order to get a handle on CP and get their app back up they're just removing all porn.

Heard it was worse than that. More like actual child porn. And if they didn't get rid of it, their offices would most likely get raided.

They never cared about their userbase. At all. Only money. The admins there don't know shit about running a website and it shows.
It took them getting removed from the god damn app store to even get off their asses and do something, and even then they can't even do that "something" RIGHT!
They just want to be put back on the app store, I bet your ass rn that that's all they're doing this for, even though you'd think they realize it's not the content contain consenting adults that got them removed in the first place but them literally turning a blind eye to all the IRL CHILD PORN and pedophiles, shoplifting fandoms, spambots, and god knows what else lurking in the deepest asscrack of their site for years when that should've been gone immediately upon report.
Instead they ignored that and instead removing many innocent porn artists and even sex workers who had nothing to do with all that off the site, making them lose their audience there entirely doing so, along with their revenue and creative freedom (The big post said it's supposed to "make people more confortable about expressing themselves" LOL BITCH you nuked the entire LGBT community from your damn site and rendered people unable to express and discover themselves there without getting flagged. If anything what you did has made people MORE UNCOMFORTABLE about expressing themselves! The amount of backwards in their logic to try and seem all "Pure and good uwu" with their moral high ground bullshit is vomit inducing), making the site lose relevance completely (Since lots of people go to Tumblr for the porn) and no doubt will continue to be oblivious to the dark side of the site. (I saw like 6 spambots in the replies section of the big announcement so LOL)

Good job Dumblr, you literally just pushed yourself into your own grave. :///

Sigh

Well, I guess that's the end of an era. Sure as hell will make finding good porn a decent bit harder.

Guess all we can do is hope they reconsider.

Oh for the love of.....are you fucking kidding me?

As if Tumblr becoming the Ralph Wiggum* of the social media world will make it hard to find porn. IT'S THE FUCKING INTERNET! You can find decent porn by turning around and breathing a little heavier than usual. Christ on a bike, you're complaining about this on a forum that either discusses pornographic material or showcases erotic art.

And let's be honest here, whatever site people end up migrating to, they will no doubt start posting porn there too.

Anyway, Tumblr won't reconsider. They got caught with their pants down with Apple, their shares have been tanking since (seriously, look at the share price yesterday and see the freefall, which started when they made their little announcement. Besides which, would you want them to? Considering that of all the targets they could have gone for; Neo-nazis, bullies, homophobes, transphobes, the list goes on, the one they are actually making a concentrated effort to get rid of are the ones who really need Tumblr, like the LGBT+ community, or artists.

Don't be so melodramatic because you have to make a bit more effort to find porn.

Actually, that's an insult to Ralph Wiggum. He's funny.

Fair enough.

But the thing is :
  1. Tumblr is one of the rare social media that is totally deconnected from RL, and doesn't even ask for your RL name or adress or whatever when you sign up
  2. Tumblr is one of the only online spaces that centralises so many different fandoms and communities and media forms (fanart, fanfic, fanvids, etc)
So yeah. Tumblr isn't ideal, sure, but it's the best we got atm.

And it saddens me to see it do the same shit as LJ and Dreamwidth - ie purge all """problematic""" content just to appeal to advertisers while alienating a huge part of their userbase. Which is basically shooting themselves in the foot. I mean, do you even know someone who still uses LiveJournal or Dreamwidth ?

Oh believe me, I know. I was on Tumblr from 2012 until 2016 and as "good" as it was though, I found Tumblr did not promote the best mental attitude and I had to leave.

The thing is, Tumblr was only the best choice because it was for a long time the only choice. To give you an idea of how far back I can go in social media, let's just say I was one of the first people to join Bebo.

But being the only real choice doesn't make it the best choice. Tumblr actually promotes a somewhat toxic atmosphere and has done so for years. The fact that they are hitting a large part of their userbase just shows that they don't care anything except money. Instead of a surgical approach to their problems, the staff at Tumblr have instead opted to use the sledgehammer approach, not caring of their damage they're doing. Probably because its cheaper.

What people don't realise is that this is more than likely a cleanup so they can showcase the site to potential investors next year (you see this kind of thing in the Q4 of the business year, getting ready to attract money in the Q1). Verizon/Yahoo are probably looking to sanitise the site, while keeping the user numbers to make the site more appealing when they present to investors. They can show the site has millions of users (even if a percentage of them are no longer used). The reason why they aren't outright deleting accounts now is that a massive drop off of users looks terrible.

As an aside, I believe many people are looking at Pillowfort.io as an alternative to Bumblr. Something to consider.

The other problem with Tumblr as a profitable entity is that they will eventually need to be able to count the real amount of users instead of this anonymous nonsense they've always used. Advertisers want a real head count. As it is right now I feel their user-base numbers are highly inflated as they count anonymous visitors along with registered accounts.

Let us not forget Yahoo paid way too much to acquire Tumblr. The place isn't worth 1.1 billion.

I'll be honest. I've barely heard anything of Tumblr besides the fact that is a SJW den and a beacon of gender ideology and social marxism, thinks that disgust me absolutely. That said, it shouldn't surprise anyone that, with actual troublesome stuff like CP hiding beneath its pages, troubles would come sooner or latter. If anything is a bit ironic that Tumblr will fall by the same PC ideology that helped to disseminate...

And yes, I think that the removal of al NSFW stuff will seriously affect the site. While not making it 'disappear' from one day to another, its user count will start to dwindle soon.

Eventually, the only places where one would be able to post NSFW stuff, will be sites managing exclusively adult stuff.

@Evil I disagree with you.
I for one have never had any problem once I learned to use the block button and Tumblr Savior as often as needed.

As for the rest, I figure it's a matter of personal choice whether you'd rather use one very imperfect, generalised site or a dozen or more niche, arguably less imperfect sites. I know I'd rather the former, but can't blame others for choosing the latter.

And imo, part of Tumblr's appeal was that it was a generalised site where you could find pretty much anything you wanted, whether nsfw or not. So they're not so much shooting themselves in the foot as straight up in the head now. 'Course, they could survive, but I wouldn't bet on it.

And since you've been on the internet a while, you know that any nsfw purge on this kind of site will soon be followed by other kinds of purges (lgbt+ content, for example, is often the second thing to go).

Agree with you on the rest of your post, though. The userbase is their product.

Edit: Also, unlike Tumblr, Pillowfort.io is not free to use. You must donate 5$ to their Paypal to get an account.

@Coalsack Dedicated users have been reporting pornbots and CP for months now, and staff did nothing about either of these things.
Hell, purity purists complained about """problematic ships"""" for years and the staff never did anything about it, or about any doxxing instances that happened on the site.
The only reason they're moving now is that the app got removed from 2 app stores, and that looks bad to investors.

PC ideologies have nothing to do with this. As most things under capitalism, it's all about the money.

that just means 1\5th of their users base can't be advertised on
More like 1/5th of their userbase is gonna badmouth them to death, or worse, leave and never come back again, taking their audience with them, which means they'll likely lose way more than 1/5th of their userbase

That's the thing, even if we just go with the 1/5th of their user-base having nsfw content, a massive drop-off looks terrible to investors. A quick check online shows that Tumblr has approximately 450 million blogs.

You're looking at something like 90 million blogs with nsfw content. 90 million blogs will not close in protest, but the damage is already done. Tumblr's share price tumbled yesterday and #Tumblr trended on Twitter last night. Neither is an attractive prospect for any potential investor.

Which is why there may still be hope. Tumblr going family friendly is far more detrimental than them finding CP on a few blogs.

Now, one of two things are going to happen: A) They decide to keep going in the same direction, and be forever demonized and vilified for it, as well as being a basis on what not to do when managing a social media platform

Or B) They do the smart thing and backpedal to try and lessen any further damage.

And no matter what, I'm still holding out hope that they choose option B

They won't come back from this and to be honest, people shouldn't want them to come back. Tumblr has proven to its user base that its more willing to host neo-nazis, homophobes and transphobes than it is to allow LGBT communities and artists. For years, Tumblr was a safe place for people who needed to learn things about themselves and to get answers and support from people who had gone through the same thing.

But now, they've decided its more expedient to just blanket ban and offend a large portion of their users rather than spending time and money fixing the real problems. That alone should tell you that Tumblr is not a site people should be on. Let it go and let it burn.

Anyway, the damage is done, their reputation is shredded and I imagine that investors are already looking wary at all this.

Not sure if related, but a fuck ton of Adult rated videos are ending up on Newgrounds of all the places. Don't get too excited, a lot of it looks like drek (only see a few examples of good CGI porn).

Actually, it's totally related, a lot of profiles have stated that their from Tumblr.

So now there's gonna be some kinda mass exodus for nsfw artists. Now my question is: where are they all gonna end up, Twitter?

Twitter and Newgrounds are very likely. Newgrounds is actually having a field day with their massive influx of new users to the point their site went down for a bit, and the people running the twitter account for it are actively throwing shade at Tumblr rn because they're based af and it's actually hilarious.
There's also a site called Pillowfort.io which is said to be very like Tumblr in appearance, but the admins there are actually properly managing shit AND they have no intention on removing NSFW artists any time soon from what I'm seeing. The only issue is it's closed beta atm and thus you have to pay to get an access key (5$ through paypal from what I'm seeing, which frankly is really modest), but folks are saying it's worth it. They're even planning to allow tumblr importing in the future, which would be a big help for those not wanting to repost from scratch.

What's their business model? If ad rev then its just going to happen all over again if/when they do an IPO
