Is there somewhere to buy the construction skill? I couldn't find an obvious/non-random source.

There should be an NPC in the Brothel on the second floor that sells most of the manuals on Saturdays, her name is Azalea and she is temporary source of Skill manuals while there is no better way of distributing them.

You'd probably also need woodcutting too, right? Or wait for wood to come up as a random option from the merchant?

Woodcutting is under Agriculture, she sells that too. But Wood should also be sold by the Smith 100% of the time.

I didn't even notice that there was a second floor to the brothel. Maybe include that as a temporary hint from one of the talk actions until she's removed? Are there any other characters on a schedule? There isn't anything in the game that implies that the days of the week matter in any way.

She sells sawdust and cork, but not wood. All or most of the non-material smithed items either require leather or wood and those are not available for purchase from the smith.

She is the only such NPC, she was added quite recently on suggestion from someone in this thread as a temporary solution to minimise the RNG needed to get Manuals from chests. I'm not very certain how to handle exposition for her because she is so temporary and doesn't even have proper NPC interactions aside from just selling the manuals at a fixed price. I guess I can make the Goblin Madam mention her for now.

I actually thought she sold wood as well this whole time, I think I added saw dust instead of wood to her by accident somehow. I'll have her sell wood as well in the next release.

Leather you can get easily though, you just use the Tanning Knife she sells to turn Rat Pelts or Wolf Pelts into Leather, you don't need a Skill to use it.

I assumed that the tanning knife was like all the other tools and required a skill to use, so I never even bought it. That said it wouldn't have helped in this game, since you need too many rat pelts for me to bother grinding for them and I can't beat the wolves with my current character. So I'm in a catch 22: Need leather to make armor, can't beat the leather yielding enemies without armor. I'll have to either start a new game or come back later when there's more content. I think the only adult stuff I haven't seen yet are Saffron and the brothel game overs, baring content that requires a specific build.

Which reminds me, you should make sure to tell players when they try to forage, mine, or other similar skill that they need both the tool and the skill if they lack both of them. At the very least prioritize telling them they're missing the skill, since it's harder to get than the tool. It's off putting to work towards getting a tool, buying/making it, then going back to resource and being told you can't harvest it because you don't know how.

Wolf Pelts also do get sold by the General merchant sometimes. The Quest reward for bringing 10 Pickaxes also gives some Bombs, these can 1 shot Wolves.

I'll try to bring them in line with some of the more recently made events that are more informative in regard to requirements as gathering events were made quite a long time ago and I didn't think it would be an issue at the time.

Version 0.1.4a update with the new Garnet Weald map and Maid Costumes is now live for the general public. New character presets have been added to character creation for those that don't wish to spend too much time picking things manually. Remember to back up your old save files just in case before updating and loading the game. I have worked out how to update the save files with new recipes so there shouldn't be any need to start a new game this time, unless you want to use one of the new pre defined templates during character creation.

Detailed change log for this version:
  • Added character presets to simplify character creation for those that don't wish to pick things manually. You can still pick things manually the old way too!
  • Added a new map west of Emerald Road.
  • The new map, "Garnet Weald", is split into two sections and the lower section can be reached by having the "Climb" specialisation and a Rope (can be purchased from the Brothel).
  • Added a new Lotus Plant gathering node (this aquatic plant can't be grown on your farm yet).
  • New forest floor items have been added that spawn exclusively in the river crossing.
  • Truffles replace Pine Nuts as forest floor drops in the Garnet Weald map.
  • Peppercorn Plants replace Flax plants in the Garnet Weald map.
  • New Cooking recipe, "Lotus Chips", has been added to Lvl 1 Cooking skill.
  • New Cooking recipe, "Algae Smoothy", has been added to Lvl 2 Cooking skill (removes Poison).
  • New Alchemy recipe, "Slimeskin Potion", has been added to Lvl 2 Alchemy skill.
  • Fixed a visual bug where some Goblins remained outside in rainy weather and at night under strange circumstances.
  • Fixed a rare bug that caused the game to crash after a fight with an error: "unable to find file: Graphics/Pictures/Actors1".
  • Colour coded some choices in game.
  • Added Wood, Charcoal and Flask to the Goblin Smith's store.
  • Acid now requires a Flask to craft.
  • Added an option to toggle Strapon and Pregnant clients in the Brothel (talk to the signup sheet to change these).
  • Poison state has be nerfed and now lasts 5-10 turns in combat or 80 steps out of combat.
  • Fixed a bug where name tags of some Goblin Kids didn't display correctly.
  • Fixed a bug with the Athletics skill during character creation.
  • Fixed a bug where you could talk to the Goblin Madam while Invisible, she now also mentions Azalea on the second floor when you ask her about the Brothel.
  • Fixed a bug that made it impossible to sell Juniper Berries.
  • Reworked the exp yield for most of the Construction recipes, increasing them by about two times, so leveling Construction should be twice as fast now!
  • Smelting Ore now presents a counter to display the number of ore in your inventory.
  • Gifting toys to children will now correctly reset your sprite to no longer hold the present box.
  • Wheat and Rye plants can now be grown on your farm. Wheat and Rye both act as [Seeds] for the purpose of planting.
  • Doing Chores now awards 1-5 Copper coins.
  • Coin Bags now give the option to "Open All" if you have 5 or more in your inventory.
  • Fixed a bunch of text formatting issues.
  • Fixed a bunch of recipes.
Changes from 0.1.4 to 0.1.4a include:
  • Oats, Tomatoes and Cabbages have been added as grow-able plants. Oats act as both Seed and harvest product! Seeds for these plants, as well as the plants themselves, have been added on rotation to the Goblin Merchant.
  • A new Pet has been added, a Snail that rarely appears on the river crossing in the Garnet Weald. The Snail is fond of Cabbages and requires one to recruit. You will also need to dispose of any Salt you are carrying on the spot if you try to recruit it. Once recruited, the Snail can be dismissed by using a "Half Eaten Cabbage" item and will return to patrolling around your house until you bribe it to follow you with another Cabbage! The Snail has an attack that raises its Toughness and can yield an additional special gem drop after the fight. The new Pet also comes equipped with a unique Accessory which can be equipped to the player instead.
  • Lightning Storms have been added to Rainy Weather. Lightning can leave new drops on the ground. If the Lightning hits grassy areas it can leave behind Charcoal or rarely a Thunder Crystal. Lightning hitting the Road, can sometimes leave behind a Thunder Crystal. Lightning hitting Sand will leave behind a Fulgurite Mining node on the sand (requires Crystal Mining Lvl2 to mine). Fulgurite currently has no other use other than to be sold, but can be kept for the future.
  • Lightning can also kill the player by dealing 20-100 damage if it lands a direct hit on the player (-25% damage if you have "Lightning Reflexes" Trait). If you survive a direct hit you will be awarded with a new Trait that reduces damage from lightning strikes by 25% and Lightning damage in combat by 25%. The chance of getting hit by lightning varies depending on map size but is roughly around 1 in 2000 chance.
  • Lightning storms only happen on "dangerous" maps, currently only in the Emerald Forest, Emerald Road and Garnet Weald. Lightning is more frequent the harder the rain is falling.
  • Iron Lamp Furniture item has been added and can be placed in your house, or outside to light the area around it at night. Iron Lamps can be dropped by chests or crafted with Level 2 Artifice.
  • Improved Will Power potions have been added (Clarity Potion) and can be crafted at Level 3 Alchemy.
  • Terror Shroud Potions have been added and can be crafted at Level 2 Alchemy.
  • Alchemist's Fire now requires a Flask as a crafting component.
  • Grape and Lemon Seeds can now only be found when eating Grapes or Lemons (like Apples and Oranges).
  • Removed some junk drops from the Forest Chest and replaced them with better loot.
  • You can now Brew Mead, Cider and Gin. Cider requires the purchase of a recipe from the traveling Merchant and Gin requires Level 2 Cooking. Mead can cure [Frail Fever] and Gin can cure [Poison].
  • Vicious Pyrodons now stalk the Garnet Weald at Night and lead to Death if lost against. The danger level is similar to a Werewolf but it is significantly easier to run away from them and they have a very short agro range. Pyrodons do not hunt in stealth so they can be seen quite clearly from far away even at night. Beware of their uncommon breath attack as it is not a physical attack and thus is unaffected by your Toughness.

Just a heads up, the game had a pretty serious bug where all Flax Plants in the wild were giving Peppercorn instead of Flax. I have now fixed this bug and re-uploaded the files with the fix. The plants that generated in the wild prior to this fix may still be broken, simply cut them down and they will be replaced the next day in game with correct plants.

Sorry for the inconvenience and the double/triple post!

Next will be the map that connects the two sections of the Garnet Weald, it will feature a new heroine in an Alchemist hut.

After that there will be a poll on whether the Caves, the Witch or the Giant Hornet Hive gets implemented first... but judging from from preliminary opinions it will probably be the Caves.

How are you supposed to get Varenye? Saffron says that it can be crafted, but I have no idea what craft I need to make it. Also, finding a Merchant Traveler who can sell it to me feels almost impossible with how rare they seem to be.

It needs a recipe to craft, so it's better to buy it of the Goblin Merchant in the village instead. I plan to remove it as a requirement for that quest and change it to something that is easier to get in the near future. I actually forgot that it was a recipe specific craft item.

Alright, got it.

Now, I got lucky and found the merchant, enabling me to continue on. But after the first, I think three quests it says I need to increse her affection, how do I do that? Talking to her doesn't seem to help, and she offers no more quests before the affection is rised. She's at 8/10 at the moment, and I managed to convince her that she was wrong about the pelts if that changes anything.

You have to give her gifts. Stuff like Flowers, or Gems, Pelts, Cloth, Rugs, Dolls, Cosmetics, etc... basically anything that shows up under [Gift] in the Item menu. To give a Gift you have to click on it in your inventory, this will change your character sprite to display that you are holding a present box. Then just talk to any female NPC and it will ask if you want to gift it to them. You can gift stuff to kids too but they only accept toys!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I decided to do an intermission release before the next big update and released a Christmas themed update. It's not a big release but you do get to make some Snowmen with your Goblin kids in this, and maybe even bring a Snowman to life as a new minion!

Level 2 combat skills have also been introduced which should make Slimes easier to defeat as these skills are focused on doing AOE damage rather than single target attacks.

Critical crafting success has also been added and grants bonus exp to the given profession if triggered successfully.

Remember to backup your saves!

Full Change Log:
  • Winter's Day Event implemented!
  • You can build Snowmen with the Goblin kids! A snowman can be brought to life by crafting a special heart item with Alchemy. The Snowman joins you as a minion and carries a unique Scarf and Accessory items which can be equipped to the player instead.
  • Snow now replaces Rain as a weather effect and Snow Piles replace Rain Puddles. Both changes are purely cosmetic.
  • Special, festive items now spawn along side other forest floor items. These include various Candy Canes, Snow and Snowflakes.
  • Chests now have a chance to spawn as giant present boxes instead, these contain special festive loot and recipes.
  • Various festive consumables, furniture, weapons and accessories can be crafted by learning recipes found in festive chests.
  • 2 Recipe books will be given on game start up or through opening the chest in Lapis's room (3 for Patreons).
  • Ice nodes can spawn instead of the usual gathering nodes, these can be mined for the Ice crafting material. Ice can be ground into Snow.
  • Werewolves wear festive hats and have a chance to drop them on defeat instead of bangles.
  • Festive food items are more effective during this event.
  • Sugar Rush special buff has been added, adding a 10 turn +15% bonus to both VP and WP as well as a minor VP and WP regeneration.
Other Changes:
  • Save deletion bug related to place-able lights has been fixed. Make sure you pick up any lights that had been placed before activating them again.
  • Craft gauge colours have been changed slightly to improve visibility by adding some more contrast.
  • Critical crafting has been added. The bar will briefly flash white, hitting enter in that moment will award +50% more crafting exp to the given crafting profession.
  • Cute Bow, Bone Amulet, Twine Amulet, Cloth Tunic, Bandit Belt, Barbarian Bandana, Soldier Glove, Merchant Hat had minor reworks, mostly buffing them slightly.
  • Mining 101 manuals have been added as drops to chests.
  • [Gift] tags have been removed from Sandals and Cute Sandals as they can not be gifted yet.
  • Garnet Weald now has a distinct battle background, differing from that of the Emerald Forest.
  • Incidence of Rainy Weather has been slightly decreased (Again!).
  • Fixed a bug that made you start with 10 VP worth of damage if starting as a Mage or a Fighter.
  • Snail Minion now recovers when sleeping and after leaving your party.
  • Battle Skills for Level 2 Black Magic, and Athletics have been added as well as a few cross discipline skills between the combat specs.
  • Cologne is now implemented and grants +1 Reputation bonus when Talking or Flirting, a +1 bonus to Seduction/Persuasion and Haggle Rolls as well as +25% to income from Brothel Work while active.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed Slimes to dissolve your gear when you ran away or defeated them.
  • Slime Cantrip spells have been slightly buffed.
  • Beehives now correctly award Wax in addition to Honey!
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Spider Farms from being sold to the Merchants.

Nice, on the topic of new companions are there plans to add monster girl companions? I know having heroine companions wouldn't really work because of the pregnancy mechanic but maybe random monster girl enemies or villagers could be recruited?

There definitely are! Such a role is planned for Saffron's daughter once she is introduced. She will have no romance options but will be available as a sidekick in battles and on adventures.

I'm uncertain if enemies could be recruited, mostly because some of them are pretty strong and may trivialize some of the fights in the future... but I'll see how it goes, it could be a viable option.

It has been two weeks since the Patreon release of 0.1.5 and no significant bug reports have been made so I think it is alright to go ahead with a public release now.

This release features the new map, expanding the playable area North of Garnet Weald, as well as the new Monster Girl enemy, the Werebat.

https://feyring.itch.io/black-garden

As always, consider backing up your Save Files before trying the new update!

A Detailed Change Log and some screen shots can be read bellow. Unfortunately, the scope was too large so I wasn't able to cover the next heroine in this release and had to push her back to the next release instead.

Version 0.1.5 Changes:
  • New Tier 4 Patrons added to Credits!
  • Winter's Day event has been removed along with most of the event craft materials until next year.
  • New Map, Amber Wilds, was added to the game. You can find the entrance North of Garnet Weald. Amber Wilds connects the lower and upper regions of Garnet Weald.
  • The new map features an Autumn themed biome with significant sand stretches that can generate Fulgurite when struck by Lightning. These stretches of sand have specific drops that generate on them, such as Quartz, Coins and Smooth Sand.
  • The new Werebat enemies are patrolling Amber Wilds at Night and are harder to detect than Werewolves.
  • Werebats have a unique defeat mechanic where they will force you to wear a cursed piercing that will over time inflict permanent negative traits on your character if not removed quickly enough. The Piercing can be removed by the Goblin Smith for a small price or by using the "Remove Curse" scroll.
  • Chaos Turkeys can be raised on your farm to produce Eggs and Chaos Feathers. A Chaos Egg must first be procured by defeating the wild Chaos Turkeys (5% drop chance) and placed inside a Turkey House (constructed or found in chests).
  • A randomly generated Hunter Camp spawns in Amber Wilds, containing one NPC Hunter. This NPC can give an optional side quest line to hunt various creatures around the forest. Completion of the Quest involves the defeat of a side Boss and acquisition of a Title and Bonus Stats. Hunter Chest and Cook Pot can be looted once a day with no consequences once the Quest line is complete.
  • Hunters sell various creature drops and can be robbed or enslaved like other Traveling NPCs. They will respawn after about a week if defeated.
  • A side Boss enemy has been added to Amber Wilds to protect the fruiting bushes in a ravine. The Boss has a four day respawn timer after being defeated.
  • Maple trees replace Juniper as the wood gathering node in Amber Wilds.
  • Maple Leaves can be turned into Maple Syrup or fed to a Chaos Turkey to obtain Chaos Feathers. Maple Seeds can be used to produce Flour.
  • Prices of some creature drops and materials have been adjusted slightly.
  • The [Fear] status can now last up to 3 turns.
  • Ranger Tunic has been buffed to give +5% Evasion (previously 2%).
  • Lowered price of Perception Skill when learned from enslaved Soldier by 50%.
  • [Silence] status has been reworked and now lasts 10 turns in combat or 2000 steps out of combat unless cured with Throat Drops or sleeping for 8 hours. You are now unable to speak to NPCs or work in the Brothel while under the effect of [Silence].
  • Slime's "Force Feed" attack no longer has a chance to inflict [SIlence].
  • T2 Beds now offer the option of sleeping for 4 hours with reduced restorative effect.
  • T3 beds now offer the option to choose the exact number of hours to rest. Sleeping less than 8 hours will give a proportional, reduced effect of restoring your VP and WP, it will also not cure any status effects.
  • The icon for Salt material has been changed.
  • Winter Coats (a test item that was added initially by mistake) have been removed and 10 SIlver Coins have been added per Coat to any players that got them as loot by mistake.
  • The effects of Stealth and Entomology Specialisations on success of gathering Bee Hives have been increased.
  • Beehives now mention that Entomology plays a role in success when gathering from them.
  • Beehives can now only be fought or gathered once per day.
  • Fixed a bug with Lotus Plants.
  • Seed descriptions now mention whether they will form a plant that regrows fruits/leaves.
  • Fixed a multitude of clipping issues in Emerald Falls that affected large plants and furniture.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented you from placing down a Spider Farm if you didn't own a Shovel!
  • Removed bug that made Blade Flurry impossible to evade.
  • Significantly reduced the time of crafting when making items in bulk based on a suggestion.
  • [Paralysis] chance from Slime attacks has been lowered from 20% to 15%.
  • Fixed Alcohol brewing bug that scrambled name of keg and number of drinks (hopefully).
  • Increased Acrobatics and Sorcery damage scaling for Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Lightning Punch combat skills.
  • You can no longer enter Garnet Weald until you have seen your house at the start of the game.
  • Varenye requirement in Saffron's Quest line has been changed to Blue Slime instead. Saffron also mentions that you can acquire two Bombs to easily defeat the Slimes by completing a side Quest from the NPC at the Goblin Mines.
  • Incidence of Rainy Weather has been slightly decreased.
  • Cheat sheet for getting more Coins has been added.

There was a serious game breaking bug in version 0.1.5 that has now been fixed in both Patron and Public versions. Consider re-downloading the game in order not to mess up your save files!

Wood is Sold by the Black Smith. You can cut wood using Woodcutting spec in Agriculture Skill. You can buy skills from demon girl on second floor of the Brothel on Saturdays.

The relationship will likely work differently for different Heroines. In case of Saffron it depends if you take sexual rewards from her or not. If you do, you will become her lover and then once you finish her quest line you can ask to marry her and define other rules of your relationship with her.

Strange about the Hunter NPC, I'll have a look at it, thanks for the heads up!

thanks for responding to my questions. i was unaware you could take sexual rewards from saffron. i'm currently trying to get her the brothel owners shoes and have only received items and rep from her quests. and i did figure out how to turn the hunter in to the brothel i was just choosing the wrong dialogue options.

thanks for responding to my questions. i was unaware you could take sexual rewards from saffron. i'm currently trying to get her the brothel owners shoes and have only received items and rep from her quests. and i did figure out how to turn the hunter in to the brothel i was just choosing the wrong dialogue options.

She starts offering sexual rewards after you recover the Red Dress for her (after you give her the shoes), if you opt out of the sexual reward, she will give you a normal reward instead and will start visiting the brothel to sleep with slaves there instead.

Also, thanks for the clarification on the Hunter NPC issue!
