A few questions from a newcomer, in English now, sorry

Hello everyone ,

I’m new here , even though I’ve been playing on and off for a few years and have been keeping a close eye on the updates. It’s been a long time since I last played seriously , but recently I thought I’d get back into it a little . When I first started browsing the forums to learn a bit more about the game’s development , and perhaps its history as well, several questions came to mind . Most of them have already been asked , and I apologize for that. I’m part of a game development team myself , so I know how frustrating it can be to have to repeat yourself every single day . However , I think the way I’m asking these questions might be a little different, or at least the questions I’ve come across and the answers given so far haven’t quite satisfied my curiosity . That said , if there’s already an answer written somewhere , please feel free to point me toward the relevant thread, so Savin doesn’t have to wear himself out answering a noob’s questions. I’ve read quite a lot before posting, but obviously , it’s impossible to go through eight years ’ worth of content. Even with the search function , it can be quite tedious .

First of all, you should know that I’m having this message translated . My English is far too poor for me to avoid resorting to this workaround , and I do the same thing with the messages I receive , in the other direction, of course. I’m mentioning this so you won’t be surprised . You could say I have a rather verbose writing style, and I’m not sure how well that will come across after going through the translation process . Secondly , everything I’m asking really is just a question, not a suggestion or a complaint . I’m genuinely curious about understanding certain decisions in depth . I’ve participated in this kind of project myself , albeit less actively than some people , and on something quite different, so I’m interested in comparing experiences , in a way , even if that might be a slightly strong term for it. So, here are my questions: 1. Why is urophilia specifically prohibited ? I saw in the FAQ that certain topics are prohibited . I can easily imagine why most of them are off-limits, but there are a few others I’ve found myself wondering about. Urophilia in particular . I believe there’s a less academic term for it in English, but it escapes me at the moment. So why is this particular type of content prohibited ? Is it a matter of personal taste, funding for Patheron , or both ? As I said , some types of content seem obvious to me. They come dangerously close to illegality , if they don’t cross that line outright , or at the very least lead down a rather undesirable path . But urophilia doesn’t seem to fall into those categories , which is why I was wondering what box it does tick . 2. The apparent double standard regarding incest-related content This question is somewhat related to the previous one, although it also stands on its own . I’ve seen that incest seems to be an issue for Patheron , apparently ruling out this kind of content, particularly when it comes to the Champion. However , there are still quite a few scenes that seem to draw on that fantasy .

I’m thinking of Brienne , obviously , but also Gwyn to some extent , Agni and Zhara , who have a threesome together , if I’m not mistaken , and Oma. I may be forgetting someone . So I was wondering why the rules seem so strict in one case, while other instances are allowed to slip through , almost under the radar.

I say “ under the radar” because, apart from Brienne , the other examples could arguably be explained in ways that stay within the rules, so to speak .

My question is mainly about that, but it also leads me to wonder why the Champion can’t have a relationship with Kinu . I’ve gathered that this kind of relationship was possible in the first game, and that Patheron is what prevents it from being possible here . But ultimately , we still see quite a few things that come close to it. So I was wondering why there’s this distinction.

Let’s be honest : the fact that Kinu suddenly grows up strongly suggested that this might be a direction the game could take, much like in CoC 1, actually . Since the Champion’s children generally don’t grow up, the question would never really have arisen there , but here it does . So is it because of Patheron ? And if so , why is it a no-go with Kinu but not with Brienne ? Or is it a more personal choice on the part of the author or the team? Again , please don’t take this as a complaint . It’s a genuine question. I’m not particularly campaigning for this type of content to be added . Especially in this context , it feels a little too morally ambiguous for me to be entirely comfortable with it. However , I assume not everyone feels the same way , so whatever the answer may be, I’m interested in hearing it. 3. Ryn , Quinn, and character customization Regarding Ryn , I saw that there were no plans to give her a genital transformation. I’ve come across posts suggesting that her code is too complex to modify further . Is that the actual reason , or is it more of a creative decision on the author’s part? This is one area where I’ll make a small case for something , so apologies in advance , but I do think it’s a shame . I’ll try to explain why , rather than simply saying that I’d like it, please. I’ve noticed that most companions have some way of accessing this kind of transformation, or something equivalent to it, at least . Correct me if I’m wrong , but Brint can become Brienne , I believe Agni can grow a penis, Cait and Atugia have access to ghost light , Viv can have a penis in her demon form , Arona… well, Arona is Arona, and Azi has her ovipositor . Quite a few NPCs have this option as well, including Alante , Kari, Lyric , Berwyn , and others .

I fully understand that doing this for every NPC would be impossible, even for the most important ones . But what about the companions ? When a transformation would be completely at odds with a character’s personality , it’s obviously difficult to come up with a convincing way to make it work. For example , it would take quite a narrative contortion to get Arona to agree to have her penis removed , and that obviously wouldn’t be desirable . As for Kiyoko , since her content is primarily built around her own pregnancy , changing that aspect would be difficult too . It would essentially mean rewriting the character from scratch. That said , I wouldn’t object to her being able to acquire a dick somehow , even if she rarely used it. But with Ryn and Quinn, I don’t get the impression that there’s any fundamental incompatibility .

The justification could even be fairly straightforward . For Ryn , it could be a way of trying to remove her cage, even though it obviously wouldn’t work in that regard, or perhaps a desire to carry the Champion’s children . In short, I feel there are ways to make it work without twisting the character or her story out of shape . As for Quinn, since he’s a somewhat less developed character , it might require a little more work, but paradoxically , that would also give the writers more freedom . One idea that occurred to me, which might even please some members of the community who gave him a hard time a few years ago , would be a quest in which he learns that his behavior toward other people , particularly women , has been inappropriate . It could form part of his redemption arc, taking things a step further than simply studying the powers he had before joining the cult . That would be an opportunity to flesh out his character , perhaps give him a new set of options, and optionally allow him to transform as well.

I believe he’s actually one of the only companions who can’t be transformed in any way . Anyway, I’d be interested to hear what you think . As for Ryn , if the only obstacle is a coding problem that could be overcome , it would be really nice to see it addressed . I’ll also admit that the dream scene where someone performs cunnilingus on her gives me a little hope that we might be able to go down that route. It’s cruel to dangle that possibility in front of us!

It’s like giving a child a lollipop only to take it away a moment later , except that in this case, I suppose it would be more like an ice cream cone .

I realize this would take work, but I think being able to customize all companions would be a major plus, provided their respective writers are interested in pursuing it, of course.

And that goes both ways . I believe the overwhelming majority of companions with vulvas already have some equivalent options. That’s why I’ve focused on Ryn and Quinn, but if I’ve misunderstood the options available to any of the female companions , then everything I’ve said obviously applies to them as well.

I think customization is always a good thing, provided it remains consistent with the character , of course. 4. Have you considered AI-assisted coding ? Another question, which might tie into the difficulty of modifying Ryn’s code but has much broader implications.

Have you ever considered AI-assisted coding ? I haven’t seen any threads discussing it, and I was curious about your thoughts . It’s a fairly topical subject , after all.

I’m not asking about AI-generated images or text, of course. I can imagine what your answer to those would be. I’m asking specifically about code. I know AI can considerably speed up a developer’s work, especially when they’re already knowledgeable about the subject .

On the other hand, I imagine that introducing it into a game that’s already largely coded is less straightforward than having that kind of assistance from the very beginning . But I don’t know enough about the subject to judge how much of a difference that makes .

So I thought I’d ask : what’s your policy on this? Couldn’t it help speed up coding after an initial period of adjustment , of course? Could it make it possible to revisit particularly complex code, like Ryn’s , or other complicated systems we might not even know about? 5. Why discourage modding so strongly ? And finally , I’ve noticed that modding is strongly discouraged , unlike in CoC 1. If I’ve understood correctly , the reasons are to prevent low-quality modded versions from being mistaken for the official game, and to avoid mods being created to add prohibited content.

I was simply wondering whether an outright ban is the best approach , or whether it might be better to strongly discourage modding without prohibiting it entirely . Wouldn’t it be better , even if only at a later stage, perhaps after version 1.0, to create a dedicated modding section on this forum? That would allow you to oversee the content of mods , even if you couldn’t necessarily control their quality . You could also put a simple warning on the title screen along the lines of: “The only place to download CoC II is here , and mods approved by the team can be found here ,” accompanied by as many warnings as necessary about varying quality , bugs, and potential compatibility issues. I feel that providing a framework for modding might be more beneficial than prohibiting it, especially since modding is generally a great way to keep a game’s community alive long after its release . Even if the team wants to finish the game and move on to other projects , and I know what that’s like, I’m sure there are plenty of talented people who would love to keep working on CoC II, just as they did with the first game. Automatically directing players to the official download site and the modding forum would let you retain control over most of the community’s work, while also making it clear that you’re not responsible for mods that fall outside your scope . I’m curious to hear your thoughts on that as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this wall of text. I hope I’ve managed to make it at least somewhat interesting , even if I’ve asked questions you’ve probably had to answer many times before . I’ve tried to dig a little deeper than simply asking why something isn’t there or saying that I’d like something to be added . In any case, I wanted to thank you for this fantastic game. Even if not every fantasy in it is necessarily one of my own , I find it interesting to be exposed to them . Obviously , we tend to stay within our own bubbles , but even passively encountering things outside our usual interests can be enriching , in my opinion. And, of course, the story and RPG elements are incredibly inspiring in their own right . Thanks again for the game, and for taking the time to read all of this! Sorry for the repost. Editing the original post turned out to be far too complicated, and the site doesn’t seem to be particularly accessible. Starting over was simply much easier, and now everyone can read it without having to go through any extra steps.

{a lot of stuff}
I'm not a developer, so take all this with a grain of salt, but here's my take on everything:
1. Why is urophilia specifically prohibited ?
Because most people consider it gross; it is a bodily waste product, after all. Perhaps not quite as bad as coprophilia (a.k.a. scat), but still unsanitary and beyond most peoples' comfort zone.
I believe there’s a less academic term for it in English, but it escapes me at the moment.
Watersports.
2. The apparent double standard regarding incest-related content
Yeah, I'd imagine all this stuff is toeing the line of what Patreon allows; IIRC, it might only be parent-child incest that's banned, but I'm not 100% certain on that. Speaking of which...
My question is mainly about that, but it also leads me to wonder why the Champion can’t have a relationship with Kinu .
Parent-child incest hits differently compared to other kinds due to the fact that the parent is in a position of power over the child; it's incredibly easy to view such incest as abusive. Plus, any decent parent doesn't want to lewd their child, and vice versa.
much like in CoC 1, actually .
CoC1 isn't exactly the best benchmark for what kind of content you can expect in CoC2; the first game was rather untamed, and in some aspects much darker, than its sequel.
Regarding Ryn , I saw that there were no plans to give her a genital transformation. I’ve come across posts suggesting that her code is too complex to modify further . Is that the actual reason , or is it more of a creative decision on the author’s part?
Both, though the former is more because it's yet another variable for writers to keep track of. Swapping her cock out for a pussy means rewriting most of her sex scenes both current and future to account for the lack of cock and associated body parts (e.g. balls and prostate), and writing new scenes to replace the ones that are no longer accessible.
As for Quinn,
I've no real comments here, since he's actually just been re-written in the most recent patch, and is going to receive more content going forward. His new author's thread is here: https://forum.fenoxo.com/threads/blues-writing-grove.38399/, if you're interested in more and/or want to ask her questions.
4. Have you considered AI-assisted coding ?
Nope, never happening. "AI" isn't truly intelligent; it doesn't understand what it's doing, it's just a text prediction algorithm. That might be fine for certain use cases, but coding a game is not one of them - especially when that game requires unique mechanics, as this one does (and most games do, in general). Even if it did - by some miracle - produce something workable, it'd almost certainly be riddled with bugs, which we've already got more than enough of. Plus, there's the usual social concerns regarding "AI" in general.
Those are two of the major reasons, the third being that people would also post bug reports for modded content, not realising that it was modded. Even if modded content was properly attributed, some people would somehow still think it was base game content; there's a reason it's a running joke in this community that players can't read.
The fourth reason is that if it's content that could be in the base game, you can just submit it to be added to the base game. Or rather, that was the case before unsolicited community submissions were closed, but that's because the team wants to finish the game fairly soon; there was plenty of opportunity to do that before then, and there probably will be for whatever project's next. TiTS is also still open.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and read through all of this. I’ll try to respond in order as well.

1. Regarding urophilia

I chose this example because it seemed to me to be the least obvious one. Everything else, as I said in my previous message, seems far too morally questionable to me for the question to even be worth asking.

I admit I hadn’t considered the simple argument that most people find it disgusting for a number of reasons. Now, please bear in mind that what I’m about to say is in no way a personal criticism. I really don’t want you to feel targeted, as that is absolutely not my intention. I took your comment as an example rather than an opinion, and I think that’s the safest way to approach this. Given the limitations of text and translation, I try to proceed this way to avoid any misunderstandings.

So, regarding the argument that most people find it disgusting, isn’t there perhaps a little hypocrisy behind it? After all, I know plenty of people who would tell me that a girl with a dick is disgusting too, or that having sex with a centaur is just as disgusting. There are even still people who think having sex with someone of the same sex is disgusting, in 2026…

So even if we can agree that these things aren’t exactly the same, I tend to think that this isn’t a particularly strong argument.

Of course, the argument “I don’t like this, and I don’t want it in my game” remains the strongest and most unassailable one of all. But going on to explain that one thing is objectively disgusting while another isn’t doesn’t strike me as the right way to approach the issue.

And I have to admit that drawing a distinction between different bodily fluids on the somewhat arbitrary basis of whether or not some of them are waste products seems like a rather limited way of looking at things. Again, plenty of people find semen disgusting, or blood too, even though at that point we’re moving outside the realm of sexuality, in my opinion.

I don’t think whether something is technically a waste product is really the reason behind it. It seems much more like a matter of cultural taboo to me. And besides, if it weren’t a taboo, I doubt it would be such a prominent kink when I think about it.

2. Regarding incest

I obviously agree with you. As I said in my first message, this isn’t a complaint, just a question.

I’m well aware, perhaps more so than many people, of how harmful incest can be, especially when there’s an unequal power dynamic involved. And unfortunately, parent-child relationships aren’t the only situation where this can happen.

Personally, any relationship involving an unequal power dynamic makes me deeply uncomfortable when we’re talking about real life: teacher and student, boss and employee, and so on. But that’s another subject.

So, I absolutely agree with you in theory. But what about in practice?

If we’re talking about unequal power dynamics, Agni and Zhara aren’t exactly a good example. Brienne and her mother would be another example, if we wanted to go down that route. Granted, Champ remains at the centre of this interaction, but the interaction is still there nonetheless. There’s also Azi and her mother, although I think that particular case could be open to some nuance.

And this is a genuine question, but I really do wonder what legitimacy there is to the argument: “It’s not acceptable in real life, so it shouldn’t be allowed here either”, assuming we’re staying within the bounds of the law, of course. That’s a different matter altogether.

Because when you take a step back, and you may disagree with me here, but COC is full of rape scenes, drug-facilitated assault, and all sorts of other things that would horrify us if they happened in real life, and rightly so. Even though the authors and the fictional universe they’ve created greatly soften that aspect, thankfully, it is still there nonetheless.

This isn’t a criticism at all. I just think we need to be honest about what underlies all of this.

So, is the fact that a father-daughter relationship would involve all sorts of things we’d condemn in real life enough, in itself, to rule out that kind of content altogether? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I imagine it depends very much on each person’s individual sensitivities regarding particular subjects.

As for COC I, you make an important point. From what I’ve seen, the first game was considerably more extreme than the second, so comparing the two isn’t necessarily fair.

3. Regarding Ryn

You’re absolutely right that this would require rewriting a lot of her scenes, and that would be quite a substantial amount of work.

The simplest solution would probably be to give her a vagina in addition to what she already has, much like Arona, but starting from a different configuration. That would actually be quite original, as I don’t think I’ve seen this particular arrangement anywhere in COC before.

I still firmly believe, however, that being able to customise companions can only be a positive thing. As long as it doesn’t directly contradict a character’s established story, I think it’s bound to be beneficial.

Of course, the author remains in control of their work and its direction, but I do think this is something worth considering.

And as I’ve already said, ideally I’d like Kiyoko to receive the same treatment. It might even be more beneficial in her case, although since it would be considerably more complicated, she wasn’t the character I chose to bring up when first suggesting the idea.

Regarding Quinn, you’re absolutely right. My message was written before the latest update. I’ll go and write a message about that, if only to thank you for finally showing my rabbit buddy a little love!

4. Regarding AI

Well, AI is certainly a vast subject.

First of all, I’m obviously aware of what a language model is and that there isn’t any genuine intelligence behind it. But I don’t think that’s really the point here. We’re not talking about tasks that require what we would call intelligence in this context, even though the term is so broad that we’d probably need to define it every time we use it.

When it comes to coding, I don’t think it’s a task that necessarily requires intelligence, at least not throughout the entire process. The same goes for writing, much to my regret, believe me, but that’s another debate altogether.

AI operates according to a very clear logic, arguably better than human logic in some respects when you think about it, and coding is fundamentally about logic. So I don’t think it’s accurate to say that AI is incapable of performing these kinds of tasks.

Until now, I’ve mostly been speaking in theoretical terms, but let’s get a little more practical and draw on personal experience.

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances who have started coding with AI, and I can assure you that it works. Of course, it’s a thousand times more effective when a developer is the one using it, and when the AI is being guided by someone who knows what they’re talking about. But even without that expertise, people can still achieve things, albeit with lower-quality results.

I’d compare it to a mathematician using a calculator. They’ll be able to go much further with one than without it, and an average person will also be able to achieve much more with one. But naturally, the mathematician will know how to get the most out of the tool.

When used properly, AI is simply another tool in the hands of already competent craftspeople. It isn’t a way for everyone to suddenly do the same work as those professionals.

This is a recurring pattern throughout history whenever new tools emerge.

That said, I agree that AI is a rather unusual tool that raises all sorts of broader questions.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that a huge number of video game studios have very quickly adopted AI-assisted coding. Perhaps even all of them, in fact. The industry is still a market, after all, and companies have to keep up with the competition.

When I talk about AI-assisted coding, I really do mean assistance, not simply saying, “GPT, please make the game for me.” It’s considerably more complicated than that.

As for the social implications, they’re obviously significant. Although, in my mind, I get the impression that the impact is primarily being felt by writers and illustrators. Developers seem to have already integrated these tools into their work, and I’ve heard plenty of accounts that support this impression.

Of course, I’m speaking as a novice here. I don’t claim to have the definitive answer, especially on such a complex subject.

And naturally, as I mentioned in my first message, I fully understand that introducing AI assistance at such an advanced stage of development would either be difficult or counterproductive. But I still think it’s a question worth considering, even if a closer examination ultimately shows that it would end up wasting more time than it saves.

5. Regarding modding

I understand the reasoning. It’s true that having to handle the game’s debugging yourself probably pushes you towards making these kinds of compromises.

I still think it would be genuinely interesting, though, after the final release, once the team has moved on to other things, to let the community take a crack at it.

That’s what the big studios do, after all, and presumably for good reason.

I’m sure that making this decision before that point would probably be premature. But afterwards, I still get the impression that the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages.
