The Menagerie Casino

Well from jump guys I'm probably gonna flake long before this idea would have a solid place to go, but I thought I'd just put the idea out there. I figure it would be best implemented when the faction system can keep track of things like Debt and Reputation.

For starters it could be called The Menagerie Casino. To most people it's the best place in its star-system for slots, booze, and escorts of nearly every variety. But unbeknownst to many, the young Casino owner, Donovan "The Don" Masters, is the recent heir to one of Black Void's larger drug rings. And with the right connections or enough cold hard credits, one could get almost any drug in known space.

Most services will accept regular credits, but the wealthier patrons often purchase "Credit Slips" so they can throw their money around like the Terran fatcats of old and personally tip their favorite staff members every credit they deserve. The slots and tables on the other hand only take "Chips" custom made for the Casino. (Or not TBD)

Eventually Steele may even meet the Don himself. Who, despite his subordinates' cheesy nickname, holds far less power than you'd first assume. From there Steele might have the chance to work for or against the crime boss in various ways. But regardless the show must go on.

Other than that it could also be a good place to add illegal items in between planet updates.

Also has anyone else wondered why concentrated Dzan jizz isn't being sold as a drug?

There's gotta be a market for that.

The most holiest of grounds
Might be a nice place to spend credits once a million creds become pocket change.

The jizz is possibly sold somewhere just not in the areas the player visits, could be a fun mini project to work on and get implemented.

TBH 100 credits will probably be enough to make a good bit of money if you're lucky. But hopefully it's not so easy to make money that credits become pointless. Though Beth might charge a bit extra for escort services, since Don's standards can be difficult for her. (No forced mods or drugs)

It'll probably change but I guess Slips could be 5 credits and Chips could be 10 credits. Though Slips would be purely optional.
Now that I think about it, maybe it would be funny if a random patron could confuse the player for an escort and tip them if their clothes are revealing or have a high enough sexiness score. Not much though, 5-10 credits (1 or 2 Slips) at most.

Bonus Explanation/Thought: While Slips are simply traded for credits and vice-versa, Chips are required to enter gambling areas and would be cashed upon exiting the casino. But part of me is wondering if the player should be allowed to get/lose more chips than they can afford.
  • Maybe the player is required to buy and return a minimum number of chips when entering and leaving the casino. And if the player loses too many they have to buy more before leaving or pay the difference at the door.
  • Or maybe the player can get "loan" chips but they have to be paid off one way or the other.
  • Or maybe there are ways to convince the casino to ignore the player's debt but those methods grow more and more extreme as their debt increases.
  • Or maybe a combo of these ideas would be better?
And if the Player can't afford to pay they should have a few different options.
  1. The obvious answer, jerk off the doorman(herm?) but you'd still be in debt though.
  2. Do actual (boring)work, lose a certain amount of time based on your debt.
  3. Freelance escort work, random scenes that pay different amounts. Half of any profit, but you'll have to keep doing jobs til you've paid off your debt or run out of energy. But if you pass out you still need to pay off any remaining debt before returning.
  4. Or if well connected you can do Don a favor.

Our only baseline for what a considerable amount of money is puppyslutmas, a charity gala that prides itself from raising 3 million credits from the cream of the crop of Ausuril Society. From this, it would be a fair assumption that, say, 500k credits would be a high end family's donation. Given the translation in circumstance, it would be reasonable to assume that low roller gambling is done with 1k chips, and high roller gambling is done with 100k chips. And i assume there can be some secret super high roller zone that deals with 1m chips that can be unlocked once the PC can waste enough credits gambling to get the attention of this room's administrators. However... gambling in a game that can be savescummed is fairly pointless. Fallout: Las Vegas is a good example of how trying to combat gambling savescumming in games with loadable save states fails horribly. If you plan on doing this, i recommend something along the line of Live. Ascend. Repeat. for mechanics. Please, please, p l e a s e don't half-ass the mechanics of this.

Thanks for the link but I may need a solid half-hour to really understand it. I don't play KoL so a lot of the jargon just flew over my head.

Though you make a really great point about savescumming and honestly I'm surprised I didn't realize that. But since it's already established that gambling has a separate section, maybe disabling saving until you cash out will be enough.

Also I thought trying to add alternate currencies was already a bit much, so Chips will probably be a flat rate based on how expensive weapons are on that planet. Not that there can't be a "Mega Chip" expansion later.

The main idea about Live. Ascend. Repeat. Is that it takes a normally rng dependent system, like a mmo, and rips out the rng. Another way to think of it is like d&d with all rolls guaranteed to be a 10. You either have the stats, or you don't.

Ultimetly even tho this system would likely be stratagized the hell out of by ppl like me, its ultimetly better than a system where you can guarantee a positive outcome by repeating the same moment, over and over again.

Though honestly casinos are basically built on games of chance. So maybe there's a simple solution to deter savescumming while still allowing the system to be left to chance.

I mentioned disabling saves during gambling sessions or in the gambling area. But maybe if jackpots stayed small (1.5x bet) until a certain number of games, people would be less willing to start over.

Financial markets attract all sorts of participants, from part-time hobbyists looking for extra cash to multinational institutions moving billions of dollars across thousands of instruments. The trading game stretches across both ends of the spectrum, with part-timers and at-home gamers competing for profits with traditional funds and lightning-fast computer algorithms
