Rushing Janeira with a space suit that's not the depthsuit results in Typhon's room being locked, resulting in the only escape for Steele being the overly pressurized water that will inevitably crush them to death. I did pick up the key card, and the room still doesn't open.

Do you have a save file for testing?

From what I can see in the code, you only ever need the key item ("Steele Biomedical Lab Mainframe Card") to be able to enter the room.
