Just a Tent Away (Unfortunately)

Somewhere uncomfortable.
With Berwyn's content essentially coming to an end (crying) and ending up locked into tents after the dungeon, I got curious. Who actually uses tents? I am sorry if this is a repost or should be in gripes, but I'm honestly somewhat lost on it. Tents played a pretty big role early game as a fast way to rest and regen your health, but later on they begin to lose that use. Late game once everyone is leveled you can tank through a lot, even with it set to a harder difficulty. It's not that there is anything wrong with tents, it's just that after you get the waystone charm and level up that tents become... Kinda obsolete. There really isn't anything that makes them worth using once you can travel around the Ways Between. I actively avoided sleeping in tents just to have a bedmate like Kiyoko or someone else since traveling around regions was quick and there was actual content there. I guess it's also my way of whining about pretty dog boy not having a set in stone location. I really dislike the whole tent thing but it's still way more convenient than the Hellhound or the dragon in the glacial rift that I only went to visit once.

Camping has always been a way to rest and recover when you don't have ready access to a Waystone or when it would be impractical, like when doing Ring of Fate and the nearest warp point is a long trek back through the Undermountain past encounters that will sap your health and resources. It's also a convenient way to restore your Ultimates in the field even if you don't really need sleep to restore health.

That you don't need them as much when traversing early-game regions once you're into the midgame doesn't mean camping doesn't still have a use. There are also a few camp-exclusive scenes.

It does have a use, but about 90% of the time I'll just travel back to sleep somewhere else. For me it just became noticeably less useful and important later on. I mean my character is stacked with supplies but I rarely have to touch them for heals anyways. As someone mentioned in gripes it would add more content to tents, which isn't a bad thing, but I definitely would hope for an alternative to that thanks to my playstyle. Also I barely touch my ultimate, I'll think something to myself like, "It sure would suck if I actually needed my ultimate and didn't have it ready" so I've only used ultimates a few times in game.

I put one tent in each region and end up never sleeping in a single one. I'm pretty sure the last tent I used was for Nihara or whatever her name was.

As a fairly new player to the game, I use tents all the time, mostly because I made the assumption that if I pulled an all-nighter, Something Bad would happen (other than simply not getting your after-sleep status effects reset). The latest I ever stayed up in the game was 4AM and only because I happened to return to the inn rather late just before a fuckton of Garrett/Garth interaction was triggered.

So are there any real effects to not sleeping?

get fatigue ailment for not sleeping for a certain period and it can only be removed by sleep and it cuts 3 stats in half

There are a few status effects (Fatigued and Bruised and Beaten) which are cured via sleep, and you need to sleep to recharge your Ultimate after using it. But no, in theory you could go the entire game without sleep and you will not suffer any mechanical consequences due merely to not sleeping.

But NO tho, this doesn't happen at all. Please don't make misleading shit up.

Thanks for the info. First time through the game, I seemed to have bad luck always triggering complex time-consuming scenes (and sex) after midnight, mostly due to losing track of time. I seemed to be always saying "Fine, you want to fuck, but will this take long, I have to get some sleep!"

My character stays awake for weeks on end, often standing in one spot doing nothing, and never gets that debuff. That's only applied by very specific scenes, not from staying up too long.

Also, in regards to tents, they're a situational item and that's okay. Giving more situations in which to use them is not a bad thing, and if you really want quick access to Berry, just do what I do and drop a tent in the first available space outside of hawkthorne. It's honestly less navigation than a fair bit of content in the game requires already.

I dunno about safe but I'm pretty sure that story will have the potential for a Happy Ending.

I could make a time-lapse video showing myself doing nothing but mashing the Wait option for a hundred days in-game and in all that time if I picked the right panel to stand on, have sufficiently low Libido and have already used Growth Stopper there will be absolutely nothing that happens in all that time. There is a list of things that can inflict Fatigued, you clearly did one of them and then grabbed the wrong end of the stick (or didn't read the text closely enough) and assumed it was from lack of sleep instead of from whichever of the dozen or so actions that can trigger Fatigued it was that you did.

I mostly walk around with 4 to 5 of them at all times. you will never know when you need a good nap to get boosted stats!

Its probably not really required, but I do actually use Tents. I like having the boosted stats and access to stash predominantly. I prefer making it to town for alcohol buffs. That said, sometimes it isn't worth the hassle if for example, you arent gonna be taking on any bosses or other difficult enemies. I usually also keep the embers item for frosthound fast travel, but I havent used ever actually used it. Vulneries are also something I have on hand just in case for dungeons. All in all, you dont even really need any items, but they are nice quality of life.

I actually would prefer some more NPCs as camp followers, though. Having a quartermaster type character to cook me breakfast and serve me alcohol would fill a mechanical niche and its a good opportunity for NPCs we would want to see very often and have scenes with. Having relevant Quest NPCs be at camp would also be nice like with the Centaurs. Narratively I think its an underutilized space and having just a bit of mechanical incentive that you invest to get would be nice., though that last bit is really just me wanting convenience. My characters are all lushes.

I use tents occasionally, but not as much as I probably should.
Personally, I would have liked the "summon ber's tower" necklace to act as a renewable camping supply set. It feels kind of weird to have to throw down a pile of logs in order to get permission to walk into the portable fortress (other than the obvious mechanical reason of piggybacking off camping in order to know where you can use the tower)
