Do you prefer warrior, thief or black mage for spellsword builds?

I usually go with mage but I can see an argument for the other classes

White mage is really good at it from what I've heard. And I think Charmer can even have a go at a "charmsword" build.

I was excluding white mage because imo that's a paladin, not a spellsword.

What would a charmsword build look like?

I personally like Warrior, but it really depends on what you want out of a "spellsword" build.

If you want to be a heavily armored tank that's still deadly with magic, you go Warrior. If you want to be squishy but absolutely explode things with burst damage, you go Thief. If you just want to be a regular mage that happens to wield a sword on the side, you go Black Mage.

Charmsword is a lot more straightforward than it sounds: Strength, Toughness, Presence. Take skills that scale off charm but still benefit a melee combatant like Scaldic Cadence and Song of Storms. Expert Inspiration also makes you a really good tank that dispenses long-lasting party buffs. Shielding Smite and Blessing last for 2 turns instead of 1, for example. Unbreakable lasts for a whopping 6 turns. It's great.

I might try a charmsword at some point, what sort of gear do they like?

I'd say that's a paladin rather than a spellsword. Admittedly the difference in game is minimal, but the flavouring is very different imo

No soulbind (oath) = no paladin, ergo; spellblade.

But yeah, my character reads and acts like a Paladin in all but name, I admit.

My main build is also a paladin, dual wielding dawnsword and sanctified gladius. Very fun and very strong

Strength/Toughness/Willpower Warrior is my favorite build in the game, I think. You're tough as a brick wall, hit like a truck, can heal, nuke shit, and so on. Only real downside is that you're weak to anything that targets magic resist or evasion. You also don't hit quite as hard as a Thief, but you do still hurt.

Throw on Thunderbrand or Ice Warden and you can hold aggro just fine while cracking skulls and shooting lightning. Reaping Blade, Shielding Smite, etc. are all great. Lunar Aegis, Dawnbreak, Rime Veil or Flames Within can make you an absolute monster.

I like to pair it with a two-handed weapon that hits hard and either provides spellpower or otherwise synergizes with spellcasting. Cloudforger, King's Thunderblade, the axe from Elosa's temple (Heart's something, can't remember). Shields, I find, are overkill, and one handed + off hand focus tends to leave your physical damage lacking.

It's a lot of fun.

Black Mage - Highest crit potential for spell based melee powers and decent penetration.
White Mage - Highest magical base damage with tank and healing capabilities.
Warrior - High physical damage, with tank or dps choices to augment your magic damage.
Thief - High physical damage, good for keeping up debuff/dots and disengaging threat.

That's my take on it. Honestly while warrior and thief are cool, I'd rather go black or white mage.

I have three builds.

Human Male Warrior Tank (Main)
Kitsune Futanari Thief Spellsword
Demon Valkyrie Female Charmer

Out of all of these, the Charmer Build is probably the most powerful. It's a sudo charmcaster. Bolstering Dance, Blessing, Sorran Chant, Dawkbreak, Aura of Vigor. 2 turn blessing is insane and it chains insanely with Dawnbreak, and Sorran Chant.
