Having done a bit more experimentation, it seems i literally just got unlucky, as now its behaving as expected, with combat every 3-4 moves, and about half the time when exploring. Oh well, random chance sometimes doesnt feel like random chance I suppose.

I dont know if I'm just really unlucky but it feels like I cant move a single sqaure without getting jumped by the centaurs or lupines, it seriously seems like their encounter rate is overtuned. In the other two areas I can reliably go a few squares or get one or two new paths uncovered before...
