further upgrades for the Wayfort.
That is something i really want as well, if the Wayfort is going to get attacked at some point. Being able to get more stuff like we can give Daliza the weapons crate from the Undermountain, and even more stuff just for flavor text if we can get alot of EC.
I would like the ability to invest somehow.
This also, considering that we do possess some political power.
I'd like the ability to equip Kinu with some of the artifacts in my possession and to train / educate her.
Very unlikely.
if you found out some terrible secret about the gods
Oh boy... you're in for a treat.

Oh boy... you're in for a treat.
Are you talking about the convocation of mirrors event because if so I know their origin. IMO what they did before they were gods is less important than how they are currently using their powers. If they maintain or use that power in unethical ways then that is more like what I am talking about. IRL those in power torture and murder for meagre profits.

Also a secret that they would want expunged would be something that could threaten them or their positions like a weapon that could kill them. IRL those in power don't tolerate any threats. Security systems are built with zero trust, we live in a surveillance state, and all potential threats are neutralized even if no crime has taken place.

This is why bravery is a necessary quality in those who have power. It prevents cowards from overreacting because they fear something might happen. They also won't kill or torture just because someone else tells them to.

Again let me preface this with saying that this is just a wishlist. I went down the Rabbit hole a bit with this. Also in most cases I like the writing for COC2. I wouldn't care if it wasn't mostly good.

The Wayfort as it stands isn't a very impressive or defensible home being essentially just a Motte and Bailey (Keep and Wall with a courtyard) with one Watchtower. The Keep seems to be square and doesn't have any bastions or surrounding towers for to split advancing troops and subject them to enfillading fire. The wall doesn't mention any towers either although they are necessary for visibility, improving range for archers and artillery, and providing defense for the mages / archers within. I feel like Matiha's office has more description than a lot of the areas in the Wayfort even though its the seat of your power.

War means refugees and refugees are drawn towards safety. Its a good opportunity to develop the fronteir either by establishing a larger fortification with some of the improvements I've mentioned, a fortified settlement, or creating new villages and farms within your territory. Ideally something Mythic and Legendary would be nice.

There are so many cool castles out there. Some withstood legendary sieges. In the siege of Szigetvár 3000 Croatians and Hungarians stood against 100000 Ottomans in an river fort with 2 Ravelins connected to a bastion fort. The Ottomans took the fort but at the cost of 30k casualties over the course of 33 days.

In COC2 flying enemies are a real concern. In WW2 when airpower was in its infancy Britain built towers with special guns at regular intervals around their naval bases. I would imagine that the wayfort would need similar defenses. Based on the descriptions in game the wayfort currently has a keep, a wall, a bridge, and 2 gates as well as a courtyard. The bridge should have towers along its length and a gate at the end to defend the river crossing. The wayfort definitely needs walls to defend against ground forces (corrupted centaurs, minotaurs ect) but other than the one watchtower there are no real air defenses. Annika mentioned using followers of Sorra to create a storm. Maybe that's also a possibility through magic.

Almost all successful defensible forts in history have been on elevated ground with access restricted. The ones that last a long time including one that lasted for 33 years can be supplied by fortified harbors. The Portuguese used to build stone forts on any conquered territory that could be supplied by the sea and that is how they maintained their presence in the face of numerically superior enemies (that and superior artillery).

In order to defend against siege towers artillery is needed and towers extend the range and visibility of artillery. Another tactic that could be employed on flat ground is that of multiple walls. Not only would this give the advantage of more towers but if the enemy broke through one wall they would be stuck between walls and subject to enfilading fire.

River fortifications are not unusual nor are river forts (the Romans had a system of linked forts along parts of the frontier) but in general successful fortresses are elevated somehow while fortified settlements are on rivers. Rome (Tiber), Vienna (Danube), Paris (Senne), and London (Thames) are all settlements either adjacent to or with Rivers running through them. The Danube has many settlements along its length. Its not impossible to have both a Castle and a Settlement like in the case of Edinburgh Castle.

Also the Wayfort can't really be resupplied easily. It sits along a river that Farrah mentioned had only a single ship travel through it. Tangier, Ceuta, and the Portuguese fortresses in their maritime empire were all supplied by the sea. Off the top of my head the torii gates of the Kitsune or some sort of secret passage (Predjama Castle was ressuplied through a cave). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predjama_Castle

Notable Castles for Inspiration

Notable Sieges (Notable Sieges show which fortresses were actually useful and defensible as well as what fortifications were effective)

Its worth mentioning that Malta and Gibraltar consisted of multiple fortifications and settlements.

Walls:

Constantinople had the Theodosian Walls and Rome the Aurelian Walls.

I am certainly not the be-all lorekeeper or arbiter of Savarran history or what makes sense to us in a different world. I'm just sharing thoughts on the subject and geeking out with possibly wrong conclusions.

It's a fine observation. I don't think the wayfort was ever intended to really be a fortress or stronghold. I think it was basically a border crossing. It said 'You're entering Njorholt here at the River Riddell (or the Belharan Empire if going south)'. And it's a toll station for collecting taxes and tariffs and inspection of goods coming through at a natural crossing point of the river. I don't think it every was meant to withstand sieges. Smugglers and shady merchants aren't going to be blasting down your walls.

I am not sure if you're just making observations in general, or you're commenting on the wraith attack in the Gods War that Champ and Antonina experience in visions at some point. I think fighting the wraiths, those were mostly shadow-touched beasts and such, and any actual wraiths likely come from a place without walls and such in the way we have them, and likely were having to deal with such novel obstacles in different ways, but also I think they were more trying to drive the defenders mad and make them submit as servants, rather than just smash through.

As for defensiveness, I can't recall all the lore and detail of the Wraith siege with Thalia from the vision quest, but it's possible the fort was much more sturdy, built up, and supplied before it was cut off... (Belhar liked to do things grandly). After that huge meteor smashed it... it may have been rebuilt a little more modestly, in the spartan fashion that it has today, before the frost elf schism got more out of hand. Or just... what you have no is all that's functionally left from a slightly larger footprint with a few more outbuildings or lesser bastions.

There are flying enemies, but you counter that with your archers, your own flying troops, or magic and blast them from the skies (which we don't do in our world because the government hordes all the magic for themselves and their Illuminati masters). In those days, you may not have had teams of valkyrie coming to your aid, since the Seven weren't really active, but in those days the Rift was more cohesive, the elves didn't have a falling out with the jotun or avanai and their fliers until recently. Most likely you were dealing with harpy bandits... but they'd just fly past the place anyway. Or a random flying beast coming out of the mountains, but you'd deal with it the same way.

For reinforcements and resupply: when it was built, it had a Waystone, which was for more used in the good old days, and could easily allow from troops from leagues and leagues away as well as supplies to come in and out in record time for emergencies unless the enemy was equally versed and able to travel the Ways Between as the mages of Estelore (which most weren't, to my knowledge; Kitsune having their own Torii gates being a noted exception as currently written). They could try and block access, but then that's just another front on a war trying to stop troops.

As for now, the place may be Champ's seat of power, but they're ultimately the baron of a kingdom that's shrunk to almost forgotten status to the rest of the world and is basically one city with scattered outposts and enclaves in its immediate area (until trying to take back Dracia). And that's in a forgotten, frozen little frontier area ruled by a Baroness that has little interaction with anyone else. It's not going to ever be a palace, and if it came under siege, it would rely on the heroes and troops there to break it immediately, most likely having its gate, walls, etc, smashed in or flown over and the battle being sword, arrow, and magic, not catapults or ballista and waiting it out.

But, if you're just trying to think of things to spend in-game money on or something, certainly there can be a rune-engraved ballista, blessed by Sorra, that Champ acquires and installs that gets used in an end game assault scene to fend off some big flying beastie, or otherwise you have to fight it.
