I was wondering wondering what the best way to ask this would be.
I couldn't think of anything so I'm defaulting to blunt:

Is there any use for a guy who codes things for people who don't feel like coding their own submissions, or is that role filled already?

(Also, does this thread go here or in event submissions?)

Go for it buddy. You can submit your code as a pull request eventually.

Except code is not open anymore.
True, but last time I checked, getting access to the private repo was a possibility for coders/bug fixers who proved themselves in the past. So if the OP can convince the devs that he can be trusted with making functional and compatible pull requests, they should get one no problem.

That's why I said eventually.

Also some people still have access to the private repo.
