Just wondered if there was a specific reason for character illustrations to be called "busts" rather than, say, "pictures", in this game. Please tell me if I've overlooked something blindingly obvious.
Traditionally, a "bust" is art of somebody's face and upper torso. However, Fengames devs started to refer to all character art regardless of scope as "busts" beginning some time ago and have not stopped. It's just an ingrained habit of theirs.

Basically this. Originally there were only face shots and waist-ups but the terminology has continued into full body hardcore bitty bits.
In other games static art is often called "CGs" which is itself a misnomer since it stands for "Computer Generated (Art)". We also use it as a misnomer to mean "in-scene art"

Yeah the correct term is "portrait" but "busts" is funnier and also just holdover terminology from early TiTS art in the Cheshire era which was made up of like midriff-up busts.
