Episode 5

After days interrogating Raeleth, she finally messed up. Something she said hinted to me that I should check the derelict Destiny for a clue to proceed. I sent a ship there with orders to use Essi to comb it's systems for anything that seemed out of place.

When the ship arrived, I got word that the Destiny looked gutted. My heart sank at this, but I should have expected such a thing. It had been 20 years since she was abandoned. Still, I told Essi to see if she could find something. And find something she did.

It turns out that the networking systems on the Destiny were still intact. And with those systems, a suspicious record. It would turn out that this was a location in Black Void space of a place I was looking for. Something that would expose Watson to me and bring about his downfall.

I contacted Kirk for permission to send one of our specialists on his pension ship (which he still hasn't named). He agreed. I gave instructions to the specialist to do whatever it took to take a data chip, which I gave him, and insert it into a terminal at the location.

When the specialist arrived, he noted that the location looked deserted. Inside, there was only one inhabitant, which he eliminated. He then found a compatible terminal and inserted the data chip.

Headquarters suddenly got a data dump on virtually everything stored at that data center. I had Essi look over everything with a focus on possible locations that Watson could operate from. It didn't take her long, and this information was sent to the fleet. The idea was to hit all these locations at the same time. Essi directed various ship groups in the fleet to their destinations.

Unfortunately, before they could set out, the Void had sent seemingly all of their remaining fleet to retake the station. It was also then that Watson attempted to hack Essi.

Episode 6

It was a battle over who was superior. Essi was down for this entire time, and my fleet was fighting the enemy without her help. Watson, busy with hacking Essi, fortunately wasn't guiding the Void ships either.

It was hard to say who came out on top in the beginning. Multiple ships on both sides were rendered non-functional. It was only after Essi purged Watson from her systems that she was able to guide the fleet. Watson also tried to guide the pirates, but it quickly became clear that doing so wasn't a specialty of his like it was with Essi. He was outmatched, and the pirates were soon routed. Afterwards, Essi warned me that Watson had learned of my plan. "However, I hope he likes the present I gave him before I purged him," she said.

Watson knowing what I intended to do was meaningless. I felt at that moment that he couldn't stop the oncoming onslaught. I ordered Essi to direct all capable ships into groups to assault Watson's data center locations immediately. I then ordered those ships not capable of going but still capable of rendering aid to do so.

Those sent were ordered to assault the centers at the same time. They faced resistance at every location, but the attempted retaking of the station had crippled them, and they couldn't put up much of a fight. All the data centers were infiltrated, and the data contained within usurped and then erased. Nowhere in all that data did we find Watson's core programming; he must have escaped. After we were done with the sites, they were destroyed.

We had effectively won. We had the information necessary to locate any Black Void entity operating in the galaxy. The fleet was then directed to hunt them down. If they surrendered, great. If they didn't, they'd be rendered a space paperweight, rubble, or worse.

I still had some questions, though.

Episode: Epilogue

What happened to Watson? I am sure he escaped and was plotting revenge. What happened to my recolor device the pirates captured? It was clear the pirates couldn't make anything of it or I would have gotten reports of purplized planets across the galaxy. Did my team make something even Watson couldn't understand? Did I overbuild Essi, creating something even the supposed most powerful AI in the galaxy couldn't overcome, thereby supplanting him as the most powerful AI in the galaxy? None of these questions would be answered to my satisfaction. But stuff like this letter made it worth it.

I intercepted it from Admiral Kirk Nansen (yes, he's an admiral now) to his love Fioretta Tasslebaum. It read:

"Dear Fior,

A spot has opened up on my ship for someone with your skills. I'll be in the area soon. Let me know if you're interested.

I heard that Riker has joined the UGC police forces. I'm glad that he finally made the decision. I can only hope he'll be deployed somewhere with just enough excitement to keep him busy, but not so much that he'll be run ragged. HAH! What am I worried about? He'll be run ragged in the academy, I'm sure.

Much love, Fior. I will see you soon.

Love, Kirk"

Letters like this gave me affirmation and the motivation to keep going.

The spoils of war allowed me to pay off my company's debts. Watson tried to secure all he could, and I'm sure, wherever he ended up, that he had access to enough resources that the galaxy would see him again. But I got the rest, and it was enough to put my company back in the black.

I was finally able to steer the company back to being a mercenary outfit, and with my new fleet of ships, and the capability to cheaply build new ones when needed, the Tae Adon corporation became the official mercenary company in the galaxy. Orders came pouring in on the announcements of the elimination of the pirates and my returning the company to mercenary work. Our future is secure.

In closing, my recolor device is in someone's hands. Probably some eclectic elite collector. At worst, it was in Watson's hands. I was sure he was still out there, but having been rendered a normal AI just like all the others, we may never see him again for decades, maybe a century or two.

Essi was downgraded, as the cost to continue operating that much computational power wasn't justified anymore. Fleet captains and admirals were given the choice to continue using her for their ships, or another AI. I did keep enough compute for everyone still using Essi, and a crack team was formed amongst the fleet still using her for what they deemed the toughest jobs.

And finally, me. Kirk wasn't the only one with a love interest. Granted, I had no kids because the Mitch menace interrupted that. We reconnected while I was undergoing therapy for that, but work still prevented something more serious, and then my crusade against the Black Void interrupted it again. That wasn't to say we didn't keep in touch throughout all these years; whatever she wanted, she got. But maybe it was time to take it to the next level. Since I would only need to check on the board every now and then now, I suddenly had a lot more free time on my hands.

To whoever is reading this, whether it be an heir of mine or some hacker, I hope you enjoyed this story of my greatest accomplishment. With that, this is Taeio, signing off.

Addendum: It turns out raising kids was my greatest accomplishment, and the hardest by far...

This story takes place after Taeio entered retirement and his son took over as CEO of the now renamed Tae Adon Corp.

Corporate Shenanigans: Episode 1

The 14th planet rush happened. The biggest story on the extranet was which Steele would win a race to determine the next CEO of Steele Tech. Unfortunately for us, Jack won.

He immediately consolidated power in the corporation. When that was finished, he used that power to initiate a merger with Max Corp. After that was done, both father and son initiated a hostile takeover campaign of various companies and corporations. Mine was one of them.

I'm sorry, perhaps I should introduce myself. My name is Saergei, the new CEO of my father's mercenary corporation. The first thing I did when I assumed the role was to rename the company to Blast Corp. I just was never on the side of my father with the name he chose, Tae Adon Corp.

Back to the story. It started with a representative from Steele Tech saying that the corporation was interested in buying mine out. When the answer was, "What does a mining corporation want with my mercenaries? Sorry, no," the pressure from Steele Tech escalated.

A lawsuit was filed against us on behalf of their management. It was quickly dismissed. Then another, and another, and this kept going in an effort to force me to sell. But I am just as tenacious as my father. It also helped that he was in my corner the entire time, pushing me on in the obviously right direction.

The harassment escalated further with Steele Tech following my mercenary crews around, looking for reasons to bring criminal charges against my employees. Fortunately, my mercs are professionals. Father knew best when it came to hiring the best. He taught me the ropes, and I've stuck to them. Every single merc on my payroll knows not to violate a law when it comes to accomplishing a mission. Fortunately, the law forgives much when it comes to mercenary work, so the harassers found nothing there.

When that failed, an extranet smear campaign happened against Blast Corp. This was probably the most damaging thing Steele Tech could do, and did. Now, wherever my mercs show up, vast protests follow, impeding the mission. It was at this point that I got a surprise...

Victor Steele's heir apparent sent me a message. It read:

"I would like to hire your entire force to depose Jack and Max and install me as CEO of Steele Tech. Please get back to me soon.

"Signed, Madaera Steele"

How could I have possibly refused?

The conclusion to this story arc will have to wait until TiTS reaches main story quest completion. Yeah, you may be waiting a while...

I can't wait any longer, so here is Episode 2. The double slashes indicate a comment by me that you should keep in mind when reading this. Just a forewarning that the rest of this story may change later.

I will release one episode every Saturday at 2pm EST. Look for them around that time. There will be 5 more after this one.

Finally, this episode will contain spoilers for the final probe planet, Phaedra II. If you haven't done it yet, I encourage you to do so before reading. You have been warned...

Episode 2

I arranged a meeting with Madaera. When we sat down to review her petition, my first question to her after several years of silence after her father's quest was, "How did Jack win?"

//insert the moments of TiTS final probe planet leading up to the final moments of the final dungeon here. what follows is just a placeholder

Madaera said, "Well, maybe I should set this up. When I arrived on Phaedra II, I learned that there was something weird going on when one of the natives was banging on my ship. I went to check and saw a plant morph banging her staff on my hull. 'What are you doing?' I asked. As friendly as could be, she complimented me on such a marvel, and wanted a selfie. How could I refuse? She then told me that if I wanted to travel where I needed to go, I should go north.

"What transpired was a whole quest to try to get into the facility where Jack surmised the probe was. Along the way, I met up with him and his new bodyguard. I think her name was Johana..." I interrupted her then, "Yes, I know her. She's one of my better mercenaries."

Madaera just blinked at me. I further explained that all of Jack's bodyguards were hired from Blast Corp. She looked incredulous, and asked, "So why are we having this meeting then?"

I responded, "My corporation is neutral. If you had asked for my help during your quest, I would have gladly given it to you for a price, as I have a reputation to maintain. As for this meeting, Jack and Max crossed me, and I want payback, not only for the smears they levied against Blast Corp., but for the fact they thought they could do it to buy out my corporation at a discount."

She pondered this for a moment, then said, "Ok. Mind if I continue?" I motioned in the affirmative. "Ok. Now where was I... Ah, yes. We took the train headed to the distant location, some forest sanctuary in the wastes, where our destination apparently lied. We got ambushed along the way, but they were nothing compared to me and Johana.

"When we arrived, we began the trek to the facility. We were stopped at the gates. You see, there was an AI in charge of Phaedra II's 'clean up' efforts. All that means is that she recruited a cult following to horde all the 'dangerous tech' from the planet. 'Dangerous' meaning anything too technologically advanced. She didn't trust us yet, so in order to get into the place, we had to gain favor with her so-called cult. That meant finding things and turning them in to an agent wandering the wastes. I eventually succeeded in gaining access, only to find Jack waiting at the entrance.

"We entered together and progressed to the cult leader AI. Jack and I confronted her because she was holding the final probe. What ensued was a mental battle to try and get this corrupted Kiha Corp. AI to release the probe. When we finally succeeded, Jack rushed to the probe and touched it. It activated, and I could see the screen. I quickly pulled out my codex to try and beat Jack to the punch, but he was just that little bit faster. And that's how he won."

//end placeholder 1. expect this to change when TiTS msq is finished

Then I asked what she did afterwards, up to the point she sent me the email.

//placeholder 2

"The AI let me go. She said I made a valiant effort, and no one would bother me on my way out of her facility."

//end placeholder 2. do note that the rest of this story, not just this episode, was written without considering anything in these placeholders and may not change unless it has to, as a reminder

"I started the trek back to my ship and crew, utterly dejected. On the way, I had time to think about what should happen next. When I finally arrived, I had a long talk with everyone, discussing the situation and what we should do now. Some wanted to leave, others wanted to stay, still others had to think on it. They all had kind words to say, but I could tell they felt the same way I did. After the conversation was done, I went to bed.

"The next morning, I found out Anno and Kase had quit Steele Tech while I was asleep. In their words, they were all in on me and not Jack. That's something that punk could learn: how to build loyalty with the people you trust.

"Prospects were grim. I had enough credits fortunately, giving me enough time to figure things out. I eventually decided to retire and become a house wife. But with who? There were many people I befriended during the rush, so it was a hard choice. In the end, I chose Kase.

"He and I had several kids, and it was at that point I received an email from Tamani Corp., of all things preposterous. 'Hey there, eager breeder!' the subject line read. I was intrigued; why would they be sending me this email? Is this some kind of scam?"

Madaera pulled out her codex. "This thing was probably the greatest gift my dad gave me after he passed. With it, I can do just about anything. I had it scan the email just in case, and when the result came up clean, I read it.

"It was an advertisement for a 'lucrative' opportunity about increasing the rahn population. I could earn some credits in exchange for bringing their eggs to term. At the time, I was jobless, and had lost my place in Tavros' nursery (thanks, Jack). I was just raising the kids while living with Kase in his apartment. He was working at Ilaria's bakery at the time," Madeara let out a chuckle, "Silly kitty has quite the sweet tooth. When he wasn't at the bakery, he was working on some personal projects for a bit of extra credits. Anyway, I showed him the email after he got home after work. His only response was for both of us to sleep on it, so we did. In the morning, we agreed that I should go for it.

"And, oh boy, did I ever. At first, it wasn't that great of a payout. However, after a while, when I approached the front desk the receptionist asked if I would be interested in the Premium Breeder program. Signing up for that really got the ball rolling. In the meantime, I was looking for other ways to possibly make this new job, if you can call it that, more profitable. Long story short, I now have 3 wombs and a gestation time about 20 times faster than normal. Kase didn't see me again for about a year after I finished modding myself. Fortunately, Anno helped with the kids during this time so that they would still have a mother figure.

"When I was done with that, I returned home, quite the rich young lady. The kids were excited to see me again. After they settled down, Kase surprised me with a proposition, 'Maddie, I think you have enough credits now to hire Blast Corp. to depose Jack and Max.' 'What?' was my only response. He said, 'You haven't heard? They have been involved in a hostile takeover attempt by Steele Tech, and you might just be the answer they need.' I was tired, having just endured a 10 hour ship flight, so I went to bed. When I woke up, I asked Kase who your company was. He said that you had changed the name from the Tae Adon Corp., and that's when I knew I had to email you, as my father had used your services in the past and only had kind words to say."

It was then that it hit me, and I just had to ask, "Kitty? Kase is a kaithrit? Did he... grow breasts?" She chuckled at that, then said, "Oh, no. That's just something that happens between kaithrits. As a human, I don't produce the pregnancy hormone that causes that in males."

"Ah, ok," I shrugged it off, "also, very kind of you to tell me that about Victor. I'm sure my father will appreciate it." It was time to seal the deal. "Ok, Madaera. This mission will cost you 50 million credits. And you will have to come with me and my mercenary crews as we do this. Also, I'm afraid something like this will set off some alarms, and you would help diffuse the inevitable situation with the UGC around Steele Tech's holdings' planets."

She looked at me for just a second, and said only one word, "Deal."
