This is a pretty mundane topic but what do ya'll think a codex looks like? Is it like pip boys from fallout? Is it like a little watch with a hard light interface? Or is a codex like an actual hand held device like an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy? What do you guys and gals think..

Steele's Codex to me is like a small but thick tablet. Probably due to added protection.

Trends in consumer electronics can be funny like that. We went from making smaller and smaller cell phones then reversed when smart phones became the rage and now everyone's getting bigger and bigger phones because they want bigger screens.

I presume it to be decently sized capsule-shaped phone-like device, folds open, folds back into compact form. I don't have a reference, though. Take something like Mass effect's omni-tool and condense it down into something with like a flip up screen and a bunch of other doodads, and I think that's closest to what's going through my mind.

I asked Fen:
It's basically a chunky ipad with a leather case
But obv has a lot more going on under the hood

a rectangular, leather-wrapped object. The injector is filled with a silvery, viscous fluid. The other object has the leather wrapped around one side of it, leaving polished metal sides exposed."

You heft the tablet, wondering how it could be that expensive, even with the Earth-leather binding and quality materials used in its construction. Once you pull back the cover, you expose a high resolution tablet running a custom operating system.

<i>“Greetings, " + pc.short + ". I am the Codex. You may address me as Codex. I am a simple virtual intelligence, or V.I. in common parlance, programmed to assist you in cataloging new life, resources, and technologies. I am equipped with long-range extranet transmitters and receivers, allowing for communication and data access in most locations. There is a short-range life sensor embedded in me that allows me to warn you of impending danger. Upon detecting a new species, I will collate all extranet-available data on the species for you to peruse within a minute or two. I have haptic feedback on my screen and do accept voice commands, " + pc.mf("Master","Mistress") + " " + pc.short + ".”</i>");

You fold the sophisticated computer’s cover closed and find that its supple case comes complete with a connector that allows it to be easily hung from a belt. Snapping it on,

I always thought it was a mix between the tricorder and data padds from The Next Generation.

Yeah, I always assumed it was mounted on your body somewhere, probably on one of the wrists, since it moniters your vitals.

Or maybe I'm just a big fan of Sevrik's interpretations of locations and items, and tend to take them to heart?

Depending on the scene it's everything from a tablet in a leather case to a wrist-mounted gadget.

out of all case materials, in this futuristic universe leather is the worst choice
honestly i'd rather just not have a case at that point. it probably looks so ugly and tacky

Isn't this described in the intro as being something like a tablet when Victor's lawyer hands it to you?

It's basically described as a super high-tech, rectangular tablet in the opening and most other scenes. It's also apparently supposed to hang from/be stored at your hip based on a few scenes, so that eliminates the possibility of it being on your wrist like a spy watch or Pip-Boy and I would assume requires that it be about the size of an average smartphone or smaller based on how awful a full sized iPad would look and feel dangling from your waist.

I imagine it looks like the Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy, from...well...Hitch Hikers Guide to the galaxy.

Having run through this recently it's also got the whole aspect of the touch screen bending to form actual curves in order to enhance the tactile feedback.
