Her initial design from the offset gave me the impression that she could be. I like to imagine that Ryn was born male but has been abused and trained by Alissa to be more feminine because in Alissa's own words, "I've wanted a little sister, not a brother." It wasn't until confronting Alissa at the Winter Palace does she hints at Ryn being a boy.
