"Taking Inspiration" from COC II's Execution

So this inquiry is coming from a genuine sense of curiosity and lack of knowledge on the subject in-general, and I'm new to the forums here.

COCII is fantastic, and I've greatly enjoyed the parts that cater to myself (as a gay man).

However, unfortunately most of the content is focused towards those of a bisexual or heterosexual persuasion. Which is fine! This game was made by folks with tastes that differ from mine and I am not complaining or faulting the devs for that in any way.

This is relevant, because I'd thought idly about the possibility of making a game very much like COCII, but one that focuses more on the kind of things I'd like to see in such a title (more cute boys, less titties, etc).

Take note this is coming from a dude with zero coding knowledge or game making experience, so any such endeavor would be a VERY long-term project that at the moment is more of a pipe dream than any feasible activity.

That being said, there are a lot of elements in the structure and execution of COCII that I really like and would want to implement in some form (Like the battle system/corruption system, as well as the visible map to keep track of your location).

My question is mainly, what is and isn't okay when it comes to taking inspiration from the structure and execution of COCII? I do not want to cause trouble or step on anybody's toes if I ever decided to try and take on such a project. The setting would likely still be fantasy, but as a writer (and frequent dungeon master) the content, setting, plot, and characters would be of my own creation and in no way connected or affiliated with COCII, especially since I am aware that the game is not open-source and the devs wish to avoid community-made alterations to their work.

Again, this is me trying to clarify so I don't do something that might go against the dev's (or community's) wishes somehow.

There are actually many people who started trying themselves at gamemaking after being inspired by some game they liked. So, unless you intend on ripping off someone's source code or setting to use for your game, there's no reason not to try yourself at it, right? Although I'd say that making a game of such structure (with maps and some difficult systems) might be a bit too hard for a beginner, so it'd be better to try yourself at some easier engine (like Twine or RPGMaker).

We didn't invent maps or turn based combat, so go wild.

Considering 90% of making a game like this is writing content -- why not just write a bunch of gay content? We have open submissions.

Mainly because I have anxiety and am unsure if my work is good enough to submit. Additionally, I fear judgement a bit, I've got some 'weird' kinks that I feel might get me some odd looks for sharing.

You make a fair point, I just like to be sure! I can't often tell what is and isn't acceptable to borrow in these instances! Thank you~!

Yeah I figured a game this complex would be beyond me without a lot of experience. I've had friends recommend RPG Maker but I've not heard of twine before, I'll have to look into it!

There's a handy list of banned content in the pinned threads, if you look at the Event Submission forum for CoC2! If it's not on the list and not adjacent to banned content, then it's generally okay to either try your hand at writing the scene and having others look over it before submitting, or even just asking in general if xyz kink or fetish is okay.

And I mean, weird is in the eye of the beholder, after all. If you're still unsure, it doesn't hurt to ask a mod or one of the main writers of the game. The Discord server's also a decent place to ask questions, if you have an account and don't mind joining.

If you're ever interested in writing content, just look over the pinned threads, as I mentioned before, and ask any clarification questions after!

(And boy howdy do I relate to the anxiety thing, ahahaha.... If it helps at all, most people are very kind about feedback, if direct.)

Twine's a very good choice because you can also customize it to suit your needs, though it takes a bit of getting used to at first. There should be guides out there to help, though!
