I know Steele's codex/microsurgeons translate languages so they can understand, but how does Steele actually speak to races that don't speak whatever the standard language is?

Even without translator microsurgeons, English is still a common language in the UGC due to humans being one of the oldest and most widespread races in it; Syri is familiar enough with the language to hate it, while Ambassador Lyralla learns it to communicate with aliens better. I assume the same "old and widespread" logic applies to Ausari, and that most Confederate citizens would speak at least one of the two.

That's got me thinking about something else: because the korgonne language isn't fully understood at first, its translation software is imperfect, so Steele hears them speaking with improper grammar. Does that also apply in reverse i.e. do the korgonne (except Urbolg) hear Steele speaking with improper grammar?

Reasons why people learn other languages:

to bone foreigners
to read foreign porn
hentai (see above)
anime (see above)

Even if their weren't any universal translators I would bet that lots of folks would learn a smattering of many languages at least enough to get to second base.
I initially started learning Japanese while stationed in Japan to get dates. :)
