So does Kimochi seem basically OK?

When Kimochi was first announced (under the name Steamy, if memory serves), I was a bit wary. With any new distribution system that takes credit cards, I adopt a wait-and-see attitude. Well, it has been around for awhile now, and I'm considering contacting them with regard to Night Games.

I know some developers here are on Kimochi. How has your experience been with them so far? I assume, if they were just an elaborate scam to steal credit cards, someone would have noticed by now. Has anyone had any major issues with them?

Well I can't help you with the credit card aspect because I haven't bought any games off it yet, just stuck to free stuff. Currently it feels like untapped potential. It's buggy, not enough games are showing up on it. and there isn't really much NEED for it apart from streamlining the process of discovering porn games you may not have heard of and downloading them. There's no community built into the client itself and it doesn't give developers the option of posting updates on their games or anything. As far as being "Steam for porn games" it feels like it has a LONG way to go yet.

'course if that sounds negative, don't let it drive you away. I don't have any PROBLEMS with Kimochi as such, it just feels underdeveloped at the moment. So "basically OK", yeah (again, aside from the credit card issue, if that was what was bothering you).

I have used Kimochi for a little while now, and I'd have to agree that it has untapped potential. Many popular games are not on Kimochi. Almost all of the games on there have versions that are not current. It is NOT bad, but it is not GOOD either.

It does not look like their hearts are in the wrong place to me. I doubt they would do so much work building and updating their client, managing their forums, and communicating with the community just to harvest credit cards. Also I as I understand it, they are using Stripe for credit card integration which means they don't actually store the numbers themselves, rather they only store tokenizes forms (they also probably had to hand their personal info over to Stripe, not something phishers would want to do).

Of course the project is not as polished or well featured as the real steam. But the real steam has a multibillion dollar corporation behind it and has been worked on for years. I have not uploaded my game there yet because it's an HTML5 game and they don't really have support for that yet. However, if they do add support at some time in the future I probably will upload it to try to reach more players.

To be honest, there seems to be a bit inexperience around it. I worry what happens when you have paid games and it goes down or something happens and you could lose access to what you paid for and any real trace that you're supposed to own it.
Even when not storing credit card numbers themselves, there is a wealth of issues that can happen.

A lot of inexperienced developers don't even know to back up databases constantly in the event something bad happens, and so on. You don't really know if something like that is going on until there is a problem.

Like Void Director said, their heart seems in the right place and they seem to be working hard, but experience still accounts for a lot. There was a case where their forums got wiped. I don't know what that was about. If it was something bad, maybe they've already learned from it.

Hello! I hope you don't mind me poking my head in here, I'm one of the people working with the Kimochi developers.

Unfortunately one of the big problems we have at the moment is that developers are hesitant to publish with us because we don't have a large enough audience, however on the opposite side of the coin, our audience grows very slowly because we don't have enough games. Sadly, this makes the process of growing our program relatively difficult, because one side will have to give.

As far as the client itself goes, it's currently being worked on by two people when they have the time to devote to it. There is almost no money coming in from this project (about $200/month on Patreon), which makes the time versus money very low. Valve didn't release Steam as its first major release, they had several games already beneath their belt, a full company, and dozens of developers, and even then the original Steam client was pretty crappy. We have a long way to go to come close to  the utility and ease-of-access that Steam has, but they also came a long way from where they started.

We're working hard though =)  Our client and most of the games we host are free, so you're always welcome to try it out whenever you'd like.

I think it would be unfair to hold a small startup to Valve's standard. I also remember back when Steam was new and pretty crap.

I did end up registering as a Publisher, which was pretty quick and painless. Unfortunately, java is not currently a supported dependency, so it may be a while before I can actually add Night Games.

We're working on integrating more supported mediums to developers - it's definitely high on our list of things to do. I definitely look forward to seeing Night Games on Kimochi though :D

I actually like the program but so far there hasn't been any game I want to get. Mainly because payment is an issue for me and the free games look boring.

So I would like to support it but there isn't really anything on it that would warrant me using it.
