Raphael discussion

Alright it's been on my mind for a while now, I thought about putting this in gripes but I feel like this should be it's own discussion topic. Now I know this is an unpopular opinion right now but I did kind of like Raphael.

So with the rather recent wave of vitriol coming to him recently I've been thinking back to the first game where you encounter him. during the first kinu quest I remember Distinctly disliking not the man himself but the portrayal of his character as someone who wouldn't think twice about doing something as incredibly shitty as burning a bunch of kids alive while they slept. My kneejerk reaction to this was "what? he wouldn't do this, this seems completely out of character." and since it had been a while I went back to play the old game to make sure I'm not misremembering or looking from a rose colored perspective. but no this just looks entirely out of character.

playing through his sequence again I remembered how annoying I found him to be. the cartoonish, suave, robinhood esk character was really overblown and feels like an act (which he all but admits is an act) and the way his accent is so inconsistent switching from french, spanish, and italian at random. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't like him then. That is if anyone even saw him to begin with given how incredibly picky he is. but through all of that he has some very good character moments that were fun and enjoyable, I actually did come to like him again after reading through most of his interactions. which is why it was so jarring to see him as the villain doing something so fucked up that literally everyone hated him instantly. I think this piece of a conversation with him really shows why it looks so out of character to me.

through this and a few other interactions I have a hard time believing that Raph would even see the kitsunes as demons or go so far out of his way to kill them even if he did. He was never the cruel, psychotic, zealous, lunatic who went around claiming to be a hero of the people while slaughtering every demon he could find. and if I'm not mistaken not much time has passed since the end of the first game, so how could he have become this way. I'm not saying he is incapable of doing shitty things as he was but all things considered he was a decent guy, at least not the type to attempt to slaughter and entire race of people without even getting to know any of them.

I think a conflict between two characters that I like could be a very interesting plotline if they're both represented fairly. sadly it seems that Tobs has written Raphael to be as hateable and irredeemable as possible. I wouldn't be so opposed to the questline If it had been done differently or alternatively he had used an entirely original character that I had no prior connection to for the stories villain. I am well aware that it's too late for any of that now and with things progressing as they are I think I might just not finish kinu's questline.

I mean, Raph from CoC1 and CoC2 are not the same person. CoC2 Raph is just a reference to CoC1 Raph but as a villain. His history and motivations will be completely difference, the only simliarity is their appearance and personality. A twisted reflection.

I wasn't aware of that thanks. I went looking and found a thread that explained that a year ago. though it does beg the question of why make an Evil clone of Raph for the main villian?

Because it was interesting, probably, to take Raph's bodice ripper personality and use it for a villain. A lot of the stuff he says is basically just the same but with a different context.

Correct me if im wrong but this Raph is tied to Taoth the kitsune god/trickster god from the world Kas is from, which would explain how he LOOKS like that one but is by all means the twisted ideals. Gotta remember the things Kinu killed were basically wrongly transformed...something... Like what Keros does to the champ if i want to speculate. Trust me when I say I have spent to much time theorizing this whole story.

Raphael is tied to a Lord Taoth, but it hasn't been confirmed in game whether this is the same Taoth from CoC1.

Also regarding the Taothians, they were 'wrong' at the time it was written as foxmorphs weren't a race in the setting. However, since then they've been updated as Vulperines and Raphael has been confirmed as being one. So now it's up in the air as to whether the other foxes under Taoth's command are transformed weirdos as they were initially written, or if they're all vulperines.

I wonder when/if this storyline will progress. It will probably will in paralogue format all the way to the end, with the champion receiving a "report" after the fact.

Would be curious and/or perhaps awkward to see if some of the characters suddenly get different busts and descriptions to go with changes that happened while the champion was away.

There's a whole story planned for it which The Observer has dropped some hints on here and there. We don't know when the next expansion to it will drop but there's no reason to think it's not coming eventually.

From what he's said, KinuQuest itself will be entirely narrated from Kinu's perspective with no direct involvement of the Champion, but once you've done all of her story there will be a chance to go after the party behind Raphael as a family.

I'm curious to know if any of the specific details will change over time between planning and actual writing and code implementation.

Only thing left is to wait and see what happens.

It makes sense that the PC/Champ isnt going to be apart of the KinuQuest, Kinda one of those obvious things that "the PC wants to inflict all of the pain onto this silly silly fox whomst thinks they can exist", but that post quest stuff has me as the cool kids say now days "pogging".

The Observer made it very obvious that he hated the character and wanted to present him as the despicable creep that he saw Raphael as. That's the only reason.

A little bit of decorum or restraint would have served it better. Throwing in a veiled diss is one thing but literally naming a new character Raphael and presenting him as basically the same but now a child-killing psychopath is downright spiteful and most people aren't going to understand going to that level of mean-spirited shade-throwing.

Im fine with it, hated who he was in CoC as well, fucker had the best weapon in the game locked behind a damn romance path. Also if you look around you should know Tobs loves the salt spawned from stuff like this lol.

I'm sure the kind of person who'd write up a malicious parody of someone else's contribution would enjoy people getting upset over it but it's weird and rude to use your position for that.

Especially considering he doesn't take criticism well himself.

So, like Anno in TiTS (with Nova / the Gray Goo Armor being gated behind sexing / "romancing" her, lest one wants to blow up Tarkus), or Helia in CoC (with Valeria / the Goo Armor being gated behind sexing / "romancing" her).
Seems like it's a common trope in these types of games (special OC, special equipment), which I suppose I would say I dislike, but I understand why it's done (as these are primarily porn games first).

I wonder if that means that the next iteration of the Goo Armor would be gated behind sexing / "romancing" Cait with regards to CoC2, if Savin was to continue the above (possible) trend.

I doubt that we will get a proper analogue for a sentient armor suit like Nova or Valeria, because both play the role of defacto companions in their respective game. But I will be very glad to be proven wrong on this.

Quite true as well. We shall see, I guess.
