Question about patches and steam version

Thinking again about grabbing the Steam version.
Main reason would be easier downloads - I've run into issues with the website (slow download and problems not on my side per se), especially when I try to grab a patch right after it's released.

Anyone know how patching works through Steam (experience not the technicalities ;P)?
Including Patreon builds - like, do devs push updates to Steam first, or does the website get them earlier?

i find steam great, personally - the patches auto-push and the changelogs are more complete. joining the patreon or substar backer version is easy - input a beta code roughly once a month, no harm if you miss one by not playing then or whatever
