This is a guide for New Players to CoC II on how to navigate combat. If you have any additional information, please share down below. Also make sure to check out the CoC II wiki maintained by the indispensable Libelous and teawolf.

What is a good build?
In CoC II specialization is key. Your PC can excel in 1-2 different combat roles, but will in general perform badly at 3 or more. Focus on what you are good at. There are essentially 6 different roles a character can fulfill. Healer, DPS, Tank, Summoner, Buffer, and Debuffer. Your party, no matter what your role is should, in general, have a Healer, DPS, and Tank to be well rounded. No matter what role you decide to pick, make sure your companions are able to fulfill the other roles. As a side note: Make sure only 1 character on the roster has a summon since only 1 summon can be active in battle at one time. Keep in mind the most important thing that separates your PC from the companions is that if a companion falls the battle continues, but if the PC falls, the battle ends.

Which PC class is best?
Each class: Black Mage, Charmer, Thief, Warrior, and White Mage excel in their own specialized roles. In general, I would say that the Warrior class is the easiest while the Charmer can be the most powerful. Black Mage is good for DPS builds. Charmer is good for DPS, Healer, and Buffer builds. Thief is good for DPS and Debuffer builds. Warrior is good for Tank and DPS builds. White Mage is good for Healer and DPS Builds.

How do I level up?
Sleep after you gain enough experience.

What do I get by leveling up?
Every even level you get to choose another power (don't worry if you can't choose, you can acquire powers through trainers or by other methods). Every odd level up unlocks a new perk with the exception of level 5 which unlocks your ultimate.

What stats should I increase during my level up?
Whatever you choose, make sure you focus your stats onto three. Don't try to split it up.

So, three stats that's it?
No, each bar offers drinks which will give a temporary 4 stat boost to max for 24 hrs. Shrine Blessing do the same and also decrease corruption gain. You can only have 1 drink/blessing active at a time.

Why should my character ever sleep?
Sleep is required for leveling up. Sleep cures some negative debuffs. Sleep recharges you and your companions' ultimate. Sleep, after level three, gives you a 12 hrs buff. You and your companions get both your class's level 3 buff, and your companion's level 3 buff.

How do I change powers?
Click on journal. Click on Powers tab. Scroll to which power you want then click equip.

What does at-will, recharge, encounter, ultimate mean?
At-will powers can be triggered every turn. Recharge are powers that can be triggered again after the power's specified number of turns. Encounter are powers that can only be triggered once per fight. Ultimate are powers that can only be trigger once per sleep.

Which power's are the good powers?
That's a question whose answers is a bit beyond the scope of this guide. In general, I would focus on low recharge turn times for Recharge Powers. Also choose powers that focus on what role you want. However, for a bit of specific's: Cleave/Whirlwind is the best power for any DPS build that uses a melee weapon. Grease and Fireball is a very good combo. Allure and Song of Splendor make a very good Tease DPS combo.

What are all these tags on powers such as [Ranged] or [Charm]?
These are power tags and they tell you what is required for a power, what increases the strength of a power, and what can counter the power.
[Stance]: Activated at the start of combat. Constant Effect. Enemies can knock you out of a stance/Stun you out of a stance. Can be reactivated/deactivated at will. Deactivation is free. Activation costs your turn's action.
[Weapon] Scaled off your weapon power and how strong your weapon acts are. Being disarmed prevents usage of this power.
[Melee] Requires equipping a melee weapon to use this power.
[Dual] Requires equipping two weapons.
[2hand] Requires equipping a two-handed weapon.
[Shield] Requires equipping a shield
[Ranged] Requires equipping a ranged weapon to use this power.
[Spell] Power scales off spellpower and spell penetration. Being silenced prevents usage of this power.
[Charm] Power scales off sexiness and temptation. Being silenced prevents usage of this power.
[Heal] Power heals caster and/or other party members. Affected by white mage perks.
[Tease] Power scales off sexiness and temptation.
[Multi] Power requires more than one turn to complete.
[Summon] Power summons an additional allied character in battle. Only one summon may be active at one time.

How do I unlock companion sets?
So are unlock from start. Some are unlocked by talking to the companion. Some are unlocked through quests. Some are unlocked by interacting with the companion after finishing a quest.

What about equipment?
Equipment are items that can be equipped to your character. You can equip items by clicking inventory, selecting the item, and clicking equip.

What equipment items are good?
That really depends on what your build is. In general its better only focusing on a few stats rather than trying to spread stats around. Some equipment is better than no equipment. Unique equipment is, in general, better than non-unique.

What are these bold letters on the bottom of the item description such as UNIQUE and LEATHER?
These are equipment tags. Some are important and some are not. Below are a list of important ones.

Weapon Tags:

UNIQUE: Only one of these exists. Can't get another one.
LIGHT: Allows dual wielding if both weapons are LIGHT.
CATALYST: Applies weapon's accuracy and crit chance to spell powers.
HEAVY: Confers a -5 initiative penalty (per equipment equipped) to non-warriors. Changes Warrior's Veteran perk and Charmer's stylish perk.
TWO-HAND: Requires both on-hand and off-hand slot.
RANGED: Is a ranged weapon. Required for ranged tagged powers. No accuracy penalty for flying enemies.
MELEE: Is a melee weapon. Required for melee tagged powers. Accuracy penalty for flying enemies.
SHIELD: Is a shield. Confers immunity to critical hits. Required for shield tagged powers.

Armor Tags:

HEAVY: Confers a -5 initiative penalty (per equipment equipped) to non-warriors. Changes Warrior's Veteran perk and Charmer's stylish perk.

Are item equipment descriptions just flavor?
For the most part, however, some items have special effects that are at the bottom of the item description.

Which damage type is the best?
Holy is generally the best since most high-level enemies and bosses are demons which are weak to holy.
Storm is also good since few enemies have resistance to it.
Frost is good except in the Glacial Rift.
Fire has some of the highest damaging buff/weapons/powers but many enemies especially high-level ones are resistant.
Blight is generally considered the worst since most high-level enemies are demons which are highly resistant to blight.
Penetrating and Crushing damage are both fine, many enemies have resistance, but none are immune.
Teasing is extremely effective against most enemies, but some enemies are immune.
Drug and Pheromone damage are like teasing damage but worse since enemies that are immune to teasing are immune to drug and pheromone, and many enemies have additional resistance to drug and pheromone.
Acid is a very rare damage type, almost no powers, enemies, or weapons deal acid damage.

In general, it's best to be able to deal damage in several different types rather than focusing on one.

What is initiative?
Initiative determines move order. Who gets to move first is determined by initiative plus a random roll. Almost always, the higher the initiative, the better.

What is threat/What is that red/green gem next to each character's portrait?
The green to red gem indicates each characters threat. The redder the gem the higher the threat. Enemies will target the character with the highest threat. Companions, unless directly controlled, will target the highest threat enemy. The PC is not restricted to targeting the highest threat enemy. Generally, the more damage you deal, the higher your threat is. Some equipment and powers will raise or lower the amount of threat you generate.

What is Armor, Ward, and Focus?
Armor reduces Physical Damage. Ward reduces Magical Damage. Focus reduces Tease, Drug, and Pheromone damage.

So, can I become immune to damage?
No damage resistance is capped at 90%. Armor, Focus, and Ward increase your damage resistance logarithmically.

What is leadership?
Your PC's leadership stat confers bonuses to attack power, sexiness, and spellpower by how high your leadership is to your Companions and your summons.

What is Armor Penetration?
Armor Penetration reduces that enemies armor stat for damage calculations.

What is Spell Penetration?
Spell Penetration reduces that enemies ward stat for damage calculations.

What is the difference between Sexiness and Temptation?
Sexiness is your attack power for tease attack and impacts how powerful charm powers are. Temptation reduces enemy focus for damage calculations.

What is the difference between Crit Chance and Crit Effectiveness?
Crit Chance determines how often you crit. Crit Effectiveness determines how powerful your crit is. Crit in item stats refers to crit chance.
