Well ideally, it'd not require keys at all. It requires them because it's not complete enough to the point where I want most people to get their first impression of it. I've given out keys before so people can report what issues there are in that release, but I think I know of all the current issues that need fixed or improved.
There's still people with unused keys out there that they might share, but I think it'd be best to just wait for the alpha3 release since it'll be a lot better then, even if it's been a long wait.
