It kinda seems like nova gets completely outclassed by later armour sets

Fully upgraded, she's comparable to a good set of light armor. The best thing about Nova though, is sexual utility. She can clean fluids off you, clean out holes or keep stuff in, and she can be both airtight and not depending on your situation.

There are heavier armors who protect more than Nova, but Nova has no downsides. Most heavier armors start to reduce evasion or other things.

She kinda seems objectively worse than chameleon armour tbh. 2 more defence at the cost of 9 evasion and 50 shields unless I'm missing some upgrades

You are correct, except that the Chameleon armor can't become airtight, and does not provide Nova's cleaning services. Like I said, utility more than combat potential. In any event, I've never had trouble going through the whole game with her. Only recently have I bothered trying the other armors, tbh.

Also Nova provides heat on Uveto, which means you don't have to have a heat belt in the accessory slot.
You mean the Shield Belt slot, right?

Or fork over massive cash for a thermal cock sock. Which would also require you to have a cock.
You can also use Thermal Packs, which are ridiculously cheap.
Or use the Hirudo Devourer/NaN Deconstructor, sold by Kattom on Uveto and are good weapons in general. (Or a Vampiric Custom Psi Weapon once you reach Dhaal).
Or use Tika's healing.
Or stack Freezing Resistance (50% is enough if you don't plan on carrying a lot of Lucinite).
Or get Icy Veins (Frostfire, but you can keep it with Feathers)/Wooly (New Ewe).
Or buy Healing Poultices from Nenne.
