Using powers like venom blade and bleed inflicting weapons with eye for weakness, or would it be more effective to just take perfect positioning and just kill things?
Is a damage over time build any good?

There's not really a "pure" dot build. Even with a thief build, I would always pick up whirlwind.
That being said, for thief it is good to have at least 1 reliable way of dot due to the thief perk, twist the knife.
Additionally, eye for weakness is incredible with the grease spell.
Incidentally, my kitsune spellblade with Blue Flame Blade, Venom Strike, and Offhand Kunai does insane dot damage that stacks up really well with eye for weakness.

Would that build be cun+agi+will or cun+str+will? I don't really know how to build crit focused spellswords I tend to just go for straight damage
I do a cun+agi+will build. I use flames within buff since it essentially double dips. Honestly though, any thief build I would stat cun + agi and flip flop between str or will.
