So with the new addition of image packs, how do I use them and what "separate flash players" does the general feed keep referring to, if you want to use the packs?

Any standalone flash player that you download and run outside of a browser. Browsers have discontinued any support and in some cases actively prevent use of flash inside. There are threads and posts all around that you can search for to find you links to run them.
