Honestly, I don't really do the self-insert thing myself. It's pretty impossible to considering Steele is basically their own character with their own history, and thus they end up doing/saying things I would never do if I was in the same scenarios as 'em.
I had that problem with Shepard in Mass Effect more than any other character.

In an old, forgotten codex.
Sometimes I like to self-insert, but usually as a secondary character or play through, depending on the game. In such a case, I base that character on "What would I be like in this fantasy world," rather than "What I am now, put into this fantasy world."

Mostly, I like to play as my own character first, named Astria Undine. She's an evil sorcerer, so this would only be possible in fantasy games. If I can't create this character, then I'll usually just self-insert in some way or another.

If I were to self-insert in TiTS? I don't think I would really mod myself aside from some very minor changes. I'd likely just stay human. I'm fairly at peace with myself, and was never one for "What if?" or changing something about my past decisions.

And yes, it would be very likely for me to get bad-ended by someone like Kaska.

I hadn't considered that other people wouldn't do this. Obviously I don't have cybernetic eyes or the ability to generate electricity with my body, and my self-inserts are better at the things I can do out of necessity, as I don't often get into gunfights or magic battles with my bow or fists. So I guess my version of "self-insert" is really "a better self in another world". My decisions are still my own, even if my appearance might sometimes be drastically different, though I enjoy being similar to myself now that I don't cry when I see a mirror.

There's two major schools of RPG players; Those who want to play themselves (often with "but better" added), and those who want to play another character

I just about never play myself in RPGs, because that's boring and restrictive IMO. Instead, I always try to make a character in that world, who actually fit there.

All of my Steeles fall into the latter category; they are each their own character, very separate from me. Most of them are kinda assholes too, with how pushy they are about sex

I wouldn't say it's restricting, since it's a world where you could be a half-elf or have cybernetics or mod yourself into a tentacle demon and have it still fit with "you", but boring is completely subjective; I enjoy being who I am now, and it's fun for me to imagine what it would be like in another world without being someone I'm not. It probably comes from being in the closet until I was 17 to be honest, pretending to be someone else is something I don't feel like doing anymore.

Sorry, I should've clarified; it's boring and restrictive for *me*, specifically :p How others view it varies by person, after all
