Getting the game through Steam grants other amenities, but it will not give you access to backer patches.
Such as? Just makes it easier for lazier types like me in downloading the latest free update.
auto download of the latest public patch and cloud saving are the two biggest ones. You also get Steam Achievements and eventually trading cards, apparently
