How do i recruit companions after i've switched them for a different companion?

I just encountered a new companian, but now it's asking me to remove one of my two existing companions. is this permanent or can i find them again later? and if so, where?

Once you have completed the "Inheriter of the idols" quest, you'll be able to use these tiles to quickly switch between party members:



Companions tend to have a dismiss/recruit option in the Frost Hound aswell.
