Game difficulty level

I noticed that the game difficulty level is with the save settings rather than the system settings. Does this mean that it can be changed at will as the game is being played? If so, do changes take effect immediately or only on a game load? I did peruse the wiki but found no info on this.

Yes, you can adjust the difficulty at any time (that you can access the options menu) and it will take effect immediately.

Thanks. Context is that I've been playing in dark mode to see more defeat scenes (I'm incapable of purposely throwing a fight in an RPG) and the end of the Land of Milky Honey quest has been kicking my butt. Was contemplating nudging the difficulty down for that fight.
