Hello!

I'm trying to gather information on what people's interests are when it comes to erotic games. I've learned a lot researching some social platforms and websites, but I have a few questions that feel better answered directly by individuals. The questions don't assume a genre, however as a developer I'm currently focused on a top down game with narrative encounters.

I greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to participate. Results can be seen by participants, I will also provide a direct link below once a few results come in.

If you are interested you can check out my own dev efforts at my twitter account below. When I create enough content and polish I will make an official game post. For now the game is very much a work in progress.

I notice that literally no one chose to say gameplay isn't important. This is a super important key point that VN devs seem to miss, if you ask me. Without interesting and enjoyable gameplay, why wouldn't we just view porn that doesn't require us to remove our hand from our dicks to interact with it instead?

When it comes to how close I want relationships with NPC's to be, I kind of want both. For some games a small cast with detailed long term relationships makes the most sense and provides the most satisfaction. For others, I want that variety. I want to sleep around with anything and everything that attracts me and see all the scenes.

Also, what sick monster asked for more hand holding on the final question?

Done. There are a few clarifications and comments I want to get out, though. Maybe you find them helpful.

- I am not into the sub/dom angle. Sex for me is a participatory action of everyone involved. I like it when my actions elicit a response - but neither do I need or even want to dominate someone sexually, nor do I want just "things done to me". This means the question about that preference does not apply to me. I answered "either", but "neither" would be more accurate.
- Themes (settings) are pretty unimportant to me. What is much more important is how grounded the setting feels, i.e. if it is just a crude backdrop for boinking (not appealing), or if there is actual thought put into the world (yass!).
- I think that generally, action is not well suited for lewd games, for obvious reasons; They are played to jill off (in most cases), and having action on screen that demands a lot of concentration, no auto-breaks and both hands, that's just unfit for purpose, in my estimate.
- To the question about consent when collecting followers: I really do not like forcing people to do anything, but there is an interesting exception to that: I am fine with a bit of force if I am of the understanding that they other party would want something, but is too timid or afraid to act on it.
- This is more of a criticism of lewd games in general: Decent grammar, spelling and command of the language are important to me. Nothing kills my mood quicker than carelessly pumped out text that evidently did not even get a single QA pass. This is true for games in general (have not played FO4 in a year, but the amount of times it used "maintenence" still ticks me off), but boinky games tend to not be up to standards a lot more.
- I personally prefer depth to width; I would rather have fewer characters, but be able to do more different things with them. Or find out more about them. Or have my interactions with them go through some sort of progression.

I couldn't agree more. I think when people say they want "enough gameplay" they mean they don't want a game where there is too much game and not enough porn, this is a problem you see in games where you have to beat a whole level to get a CG or something. Then again if you have too little gameplay then it's less of a "game" and more of an interactive video, which is the problem with VNs and old porn flash "games" like Meet and Fuck where the interactivity is so limited it's basically pointless and you'd be better off watching regular porn.

I think the reason why games where every enemy has sex scenes (like fenoxo games and other erotic rpgs) do so well is because they have a good mix of gameplay and porn.

I'd say the perfect ratio is when there's exactly enough gameplay that you need 1 hand for the keyboard, and the porn is consistent enough to keep one hand on your dick. That just seems like the common sense balance to me.
