Current state of kineticist?

Hi, I'm new to the game. The class looks interesting, but I've heard that it currently lacks in content and isn't as well implemented as other classes. Is this true? Is it worth it to pick kineticist instead of the other classrs?

While Psychic powers were always planned, the Devs couldn't agree on what exactly they should be or how to implement them until very late, so it doesn't have as much unique content. It's still perfectly playable, especially after Fenoxo (the lead Developer) did a playthrough and tuned up some of the abilities.

Class-specific content isn't all that common to begin with. A lot of equipment seems to have been designed for specific classes*, but there's nothing stopping you from using gear on the 'wrong' class.
*Mercenaries (are supposed to) want Bonus HP and Defense, Smugglers want Evasion, Techs want Shields, Kineticists want ???

If you feel you took the wrong Perk, you can refund it if the Cheat Menu is active.
You can't refund Stat points, but it's possible to max out all stats with Stat Training.

A lot of the older dungeons which have special methods of solving puzzles for various classes don't have anything unique for Kineticists, forcing you to use the generic solution. That said, Kineticist is—in my opinion—the strongest class in the game right now; it's a very viable pick... not that combat in TiTS is by any means difficult anyway.

Edit: Ha, I procrastinated on my response for a bit while I attended to some other things and ended up being pre-empted by Theron. Well, corroborating information can't hurt!

I don't know if I'd say 'a lot'.
1. FIRST-14.
2. KaraQuest 2
3. Landmines in No Myr's Land are auto-disarmed by Smugglers.
4. Kiro's recruitment used to have a unique solution for Techs, but it no longer works.
5. Petra's Whip has a variant for Mercs, Smugglers, Techs but not Kineticists.
6. Syri's quest has an option for extra pay data for Techs (but no unique solutions).
7. Smugglers & Techs have unique options when confronting the Pirates in Sandra Quest Pt 2. Mercs don't.
8. ???
Most of the 'main dungeons' don't have Class specific things.
I think it's generally the side content.

True, sorry; my intended meaning was "a lot of the ones which have any class-specific content at all."

Oh, thank you both. I'm still undecided. Not having unique content kind of puts a damper on things, at least to me.

I'm not concerned about the viability of it, it's moreso the roleplay aspect.

It's not really terribly noticeable since class callouts are pretty rare in general, but if you want the most class-specific content possible you'll probably want to choose either Smuggler or Tech Specialist.

Kineticist is expressly not a Telepath or a Precog or anything like that, just so they wouldn't have to go back and retrofit content.

It was added in July 2023, so anything written after that probably takes it into account, if it thinks about Class at all.

Staffs are designed with Kineticist in mind and the Psi-Noise Generator Accessory only works for them, even if cheated in for another Class (though I don't know how useful it actually is compared to other Accessories). The Custom Psi-Weapon that can be crafted late in the game has better stats for Kineticists.
