CoC2 Steam version: But why tho?

So with CoC2 out on steam (Congrats on managing that btw! Didnt even know steam allowed such adult games on there! You guys will probably end up being one of the few games to get an AO rating, right next to shit like Hatred, lol), theres something thats kinda been bugging me:

Why should I even bother with it?

Now I know that sounds rude of me to say, but when ya think about it, it doesnt really make sense. We already have public releases coming out on the regular for free, and if you want to thow money at the dev team, theres always patreon.

So, whats really the point of the steam release, anyway? Forgive me for saying so, but at this point it just seems kinda redundant.

And on to the more touchy subject, why is it 10 bucks? I thought all fenco games were being made with the intention to be freeware? Will it become free when the game finally finishes development?

Apologies if its rude of me to ask any of this, im just curious is all, and figured i may as well ask.

Mostly to give a bit of support to devs.
But like i said, we have patreon for that.

In fact, since its monthy and not a one and done deal, patreon is a much better option if you wanna throw money at them.

Qnd if you can only afford a one and done, you can always just subscribe once, and then cancel omce the money goes through for the first cycle.

This question has been asked several times before. The main points are:
  • To give some financial support (as stated above), but as a one-off payment rather than a subscription (good for those who don't like/can't afford subscriptions)
  • Achievements (and possibly trading cards in the future)
  • Automatic updates
  • Instead of having to download the entire game again with each update, you only have to download the new stuff (good for those with very slow DL speeds and/or very limited bandwidth)
Another point that I don't think has been mentioned before is that by putting CoC2 on a well-known gaming platform, its potential audience increases significantly; people who might like the game but would otherwise never hear about it can find it on Steam's search engine or have it recommended to them by friends or Steam's recommendation algorithm.

Fair enough, i suppose.

Although, and again, i hope im not being rude by saying so, im doubtful as to whether steam and other outlets will allow a game like CoC2 to get a lot of attention, and it all still begs the question as to if it will stay 10 bucks when the game is fully finished.

I wonder if TiTS and CoC1 will get steam releases, as well? Thatd be pretty damn cool!

Whatever attention it gets from Steam, that's more than it'd get without Steam. I, and presumably many others, only discovered Fen's games by accident, so having those games in multiple locations (especially well-known ones) makes it more likely for people to find them that way.

CoC, probably not; they'd have to port it to a non-Flash system first, and there's no indication they're going to do that. TiTS, the devs have officially stated "we don't know", but if they decide "yes" it'll still have to wait until the JS port is finished.

Another factor that you're not considering is that the achievements allow them to track player choices in a way they can't do with other versions. It's one more metric they can use for... anything they think it's worth applying 'what our players do' to, really.

And on to the more touchy subject, why is it 10 bucks?
Because they decided that was a fair price for a one-off subscription for an early-access game?

Sure, if you don't want to get any of the advantages that come with the Steam version. Or any access to continuing backer builds and other content after gaming the system for a one-off payment...

Well, I bought it for steam a while ago and I had multiple reasons:

1) I was not playing it enough to justify (to myself) keeping the Patreon up, so I bought it at steam.
2) I always have issues downloading from Fenoxo.com and the auto-update is just more comfortable.
3) Achievemnts are nice, even if you only use them as ideas what to do next.

At first I wondered why anyone would by it at steam and now I wouldn't want to miss it.. :D

I only found out about CoC2 because it appeared on Steam.

And its not like this is the only big name porn game on the store, Subverse for instance entered into early access recently and got alot of attention.

The only way I'd want more achievements is if it tracked what you had done so far and unlocked them after the fact when they went live.

It just might. I bought the Steam version just the other day when it was on sale, and imported my save files, and it straight away gave me the achievements for what I'd already done.

A couple other points to note:

-Patreon is somewhat ambivalent to adult-oriented content. They're writing up more rules, enforcement is highly inconsistent, and that hammer could come down at any time with little to no warning. Diversifying now makes it less likely the game will be cancelled due to lack of funding. I've seen it happen, and don't want a repeat.

-Cloud saves. I've lost my file more than once, and it's harder to rebuild every time, both because I get tired of re-treading ground, and because the amount of content is constantly increasing and getting denser. It's a lot easier to enjoy new content when you've already cleared most of what's already out there.

So yeah, there are a lot of pros to putting the game on Steam (and I'll add there are more adult titles on the platform than you might realize), and they tend to outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Idk... sorry if any of this is rude of me to say, but personally, i dont really like that line of thought for development. At least not for something like this game. The reason being is that im kinda paranoid that some stuff may get left on the wayside. Remember the tower thing in Tel'Ader (idk if im spelling that right, its been a while, lol) in CoC1? With like some plant chick or whatever? She had maybe like 5 bits of conversation and that was it. Im also afraid it may lead to content kinda stagnating and things not branching out into more unique stuff. Idk, maybe im just being a paranoid spaz, but i just cant help be a bit hesitant to say the least.

Fair enough. I too am in the "accidental discovery club", so i totally get what you mean.

Damn. Honestly, its kinda a shame how CoC1 has been kinda thrown by the wayside. Dont get me wrong, i understand why its being done, but still.

Yeah, i see what you mean. Plus its less of a hassel, too. Patreon should really add some kinda tip jar system, kinda like what Ko-Fi has. Make it so us poorer scrubs can throw pennies instead of dollars, lol.

Because they decided that was a fair price for a one-off subscription for an early-access game?

Yeah, id say 10 bucks is pretty reasonable. Hell, now that i think aboit it, its a pretty damn good deal all things considered. Im pretty tempted to get it myself so i can stay on top of the updates, and i havenet even played a single minute of CoC2, lol!

All good points. And about that patreon bit, honestly i wouldnt be surprised in the slighrest if within a year things got so bad that Fen and Co just decided to jump ship from there altogether. And i hope this isnt rude of me to say, but a part of me kinda wishes for that after the bs that went down with Nykke and the Wyrmlings. Dont get me wrong, i get why the devs did it, and i dont blame or knock them at all for it, but it still chaps my ass that they had to get put into that position and be forced to do it in the first place.

And its not like this is the only big name porn game on the store, Subverse for instance entered into early access recently and got alot of attention.

Oh shit, right, i forgot about that! Damn. Well, heres hoping CoC2 gets the same kinda spotlight!

Comparing the development of CoC1 to TiTS or CoC2 isn't particularly useful since the latter two games have a much more structured development process, particularly this game. So there's no point in winding yourself up over the thought of things happening in that game happening in this one.

One of the benefits of the submission process is that the devs can make sure that there's enough meat on the bones of content to be worth including. If it gets expanded later, great, if not then at least what does get added is substantial enough that it's not a narrative dead-end. For examples of this, take a look at the Event Submissions forum and some of the stuff that's been accepted, like strawberry_tea's Clementine and Valencia or Fleep's Lyla. Each of those represented a substantial amount of content right at the start and each has gotten expanded since then.

Yeah, you have a good point, though i cant help but still be a tad bit concerned.

But hey, things have been going good so far, so ill do my best to stay optimistic!

There are hentai games on Steam that outright have brutal and violent rape. I think there's some guro shit as well.

I browse f95 to see what's popular(I don't pirate it's just a place to find out new stuff) and I've seen a lot of shit that I thought could only exist in obscure indie space get recommended to me on Steam because I bought ONE hentai RPG for like a buck. None of the ones I've seen have rape, snuff, or even shit like loli and shota in the content warnings on their steam pages when f95 makes sure to do so.

Say what you want about Epic Games and Apple but their criticisms of Steam are very justified and evidence backed.

Shit, your right. You have a good point. I remember Sseth once talked about one of those hentai games with a real curveball fucked up moment. I wont go into detail, but lets just say.... nah, i cant think of anything that wouldnt be in poor taste.

While i dont mind shit like that being on steam per se,
when we have things like postal, alien isolation, outlast, and other games with really fucked up stuff in them on the same platform and getting praise, we really dont have much room to bitch about the mere presence of fucked up stuff in hentai games. Yeah you could make the argument that these games are meant for a different kind of entertainent, and other stuff, but to me that just seems a bit shallow, if you dont mind my saying so. Just my personal take tho. Hope im getting my point across.
regardless, the least they could do it put up some more thorough content warnings. I pity the poor bastards that have gotten blindsided by that one scene in evenicle.

If youve played it or seen Sseths video on it, you know exactly what im talking about.

"The monster wasn't fed for weeks; he wasn't hungry.

He was starving."

Evenicle and Splatter School are two hentai games I refuse to play, partly because of bowling balls(damn you SsethTzeentach!) and partly because of guro.

As for the topic at hand, all the reasons I can think of for putting it on steam have been mentioned, besides maybe for those people that want to contribute, but don't have enough to spend on a patreon subscription.

Yup, in laymen's terms you could say this is just a manner of putting ones eggs into separate baskets rather than keeping them all in one, that one in this case being Patreon, which is just a basket waiting to tip and drop those eggs. It's the same reason Subscribestar is a failsafe for a lot of Patreon users too.
It's never a good idea to stick to one source of income. I've been too long in the creative world online to see how that works.

Like yours truly! Honestly, the more i think about it, the more i like it, cuz it gives me a means of supporting the game, and i get backer access despite my shoestring budget! Which is pretty much what you just said, lol.

I just hope the fears i stated earlier remain unfounded...

Splatter School
Googles it and sees a screencap of the title screen.

What in the ever loving monkey fucking christ wagons did i just bear witness to and how much of my soul do i need to give up to forget it.

Patreon is inherently unstable in that regard. If enough shrieking morons complain they'll find a rule to drop you or just make up a new one out of thin air.

Thats only half the driving force of the issue.

The other half is companies like paypal, who practically own patreon at this point.

Theyre the ones that called for a crackdown on some nsfw content and forced the wyrmling changes way back when, as well as screwing over a good number of other creators, like sinesian.

No matter what opinions you may have on their work, whatever it may entail, they sure as hell didnt deserve to get their income and livelihood curb stomped like that.
