Anyone with a minimum knowledge of games and role playing knows that each of the 3 careers you choose at the beginning, is equivalent to one of the 3 basic classes that you take in any role playing game. Being Mercenary = Warrior, Smuggler = Rogue and Tech Specialist = Mage. This means that if we want to play with something similar to other classes (which in this case, we will call them subclasses in order to differentiate them from the main 3), such as Paladin or Charmer, we need to acquire sets of equipment and specific abilities for that combat style!

So I ask you, how do you do that? Which subclasses do you prefer to use and how do you build them? What equipment, special abilities and strategies do you combine to get closer to the desired subclasses?

Tech Specialist = Mage.
I'd argue this is only true insofar as mages use intelligence and non-physical weaponry. In effect, while there's similarities if you go with a ranged build, Tech Specialists often feel much more like a bruiser, perhaps fitting with what you'd call a "paladin" even though there's no real subclasses and you largely just play how you want with your equipment and class powers. Cause the Tech Specialist has lots of really tanky powers and perks, buffing their shields to hefty amounts, and the Charge Weapon ability basically supercharges their melee to become very strong. So much so that when I wanted to make a character intended to have the aesthetics and function of an "angel," I picked Tech Specialist.

That said, there's really not any "subclasses," beyond perhaps a divide between melee-focused and ranged-focused perk choices.

The reason Ranged Mercs are better than Melee Mercs boils down to Ranged having better internal synergies, particularly with their special attack. Rapid Fire stacks with everything. Power Strike does not. I really wish they'd fix that.

TiTS doesn't really work that way...
I didn't say the game works like this, I meant it CAN work like that!

I called it a subclass just to differentiate between the classes of the game and to have a better understanding!

I myself created a character totally inspired by Goku, being a mercenary who for his weapons, armor, statistics and abilities (using Lightning Rod and Steele Tech Suit, investing in strength and reflexes and choosing all abilities melee) could be classified as a monk!

Each class is subdivided into Range/Melee other than that there is no subclasses.
In less than 200 days you can get a level 10 character with all stats maxed out so there isn't any reason to invest in reflexes over aim for example.
Tech benefits a lot from having shields up so seeking armor who synergize with shields is better than hp for techs. Melee tech can deal A LOT of damage with the deep freeze combo, so it is closer to Paladin I guess? Don't know much about other classes as I haven't played Smuggler or Merc yet.
Would imagine Smuggler would be very OP with double shot and Heavy SlutRay, so they problaby would be closer to a Mage than Tech
