Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'charAt')

I've gotten this message since switching over to the new engine when interacting with NPCs and I'm not entirely sure why as it doesn't happen with all of them, nor does it only happen with the NPCs or scenes added after the new engine had come out.

I assume it has to do with the fact I am using an edited save, but I do not know how to fix it and I'd really hope not to have to start all over if I can.
