Can someone explain the combat mechanics in detail?

How is the damage inflicted calculated in the game? How exactly do Critical Hits work? There is some basic description of each stat in the Codex, but the order in which these modifiers (Attack Power, Armor Penetration, Armor, Critical Damage, etc.) are applied will change the damage.
