In one of the songs River can be asked to sing (the "sausage" one), the fourth stanza is missing a space between "matter" and "I", or possibly an entire word.
Poetically, "no matter I try" seems like it fits best here as-is, rather than trying to squeeze some extra word in, but it is a bit of an odd turn of phrase.
