“Magic” weapons

Simple question: Do the handful of weapons which list their damage type as “magical” (i.e. the wooden/metal/fire rods, and the three kitsune scroll weapons) actually use spellpower as their attack stat, or do they still use attack power (i.e. strength), but simply target an enemy’s magic defenses instead of their physical ones?
