Right now, you don't. The system is fully automatic. lowercase_donkey was working on a way to let you choose which race you count as, from the top few you qualify for. Not sure what happened to it.

I mean, are you trying to save in the Codex? If you can't save at any time at all, that's a problem, but not being able to save in the Codex is deliberate.
