Just as the title suggests, I'm trying out CoC2 after years of seeing it around. However, I'm finding it quite overwhelming in comparison to TiTS. Is there anything the community here can share to help me get started? I just got through the tutorial, and am wondering if I should just head straight north or south seeing as there's a quest north, but I was given a warning for heading north.

Best way to go about this is to explore and when you find something search it up on this forum or ask for help her or at the official Discord ( https://discord.com/channels/208865678424276992/1466488433567338599 ), also you have the Wiki as source ( https://wiki.smutosaur.us/CoC2/Main_Page ) of help.
You indeed gonna run into things that you might have done otherwise that would yield an better result so use the ingame auto save feature if necessary to load older games else you could simply have make an save when you feel you are at an crosspoint for backup.

Well, we have Pallet's guide to CoC2, but it's meta (in-game time optimization and the like)

I should just head straight north
Yes. That's the easiest area and the direction of the main quest.

Once you get a couple of levels under your belt you can start exploring the other directions for optional content.

Make sure you have a full party (your PC + 2 Companions) with you. Cait and Brint are available right away. They both also have multiple sets (accessible via the Character tab of your Journal): Cait can be a healer by default or switch to a tease-damage-dealer; Brint starts out as a physical damage dealer but can switch to a tank. Having one healer, one damage dealer, and one tank is always recommended.

You can grab a lot of useful gear right in town, and equipment doesn't really get too outdated in this game, unlike TiTS. If you find equipment you like, you can absolutely use it all the way to endgame.
