Why is sex necessary in some cases?

For example, if you want to recruit Anno, Syri, and Shekka into your crew and gain access to the side quests accompanying them, you need to have sex with them. Or another example, during the tutorial, if you don't fuck Celise, you'll instead kick her out and you never see her again. There's no other alternative. I've probably said this before, but sex should be a choice for the player, not something that should be forced upon you. What if I don't want to have sex with anyone? What if I wanted to have sex with specific characters? Like I get it, this is an adult game, I don't have a problem with that. But that doesn't mean sex should be a required component or something along those lines. I probably said this before, but sex should be a choice for the player, not something forced upon you.

If I had to guess, it's because of what the PC does for them.

For Anno, you save a once doomed crew and introduce a new technology that she gets to take credit for, earning major brownie points with Steele Tech's higher ups.

For Syri, you help her save someone important to her and generally make her life better.

For Shekka, you save her species from extinction and make them more intelligent.

All of these things couldn't be done without the PC and none of it is small.

It's never required to progress the game. It's required to progress certain character arcs, usually so that authors don't have to account for whether you're in a relationship or not, and don't have to take on the additional load of trying to make a character that exists to dispense sex scenes feel "complete" without the sex.
