I've started a new game as a Mercenary class, but when I fought her, she'd beat me 9 times out of 10. My melee and ranged attacks do pitiful damage, and it doesn't help that her shield regenerates each round. Even playing on Easy Mode doesn't help, and she was supposed to be the starting enemy. Is a starting enemy supposed to be this difficult?

The Gryvain Techie is not supposed to be beaten with health damage. Instead with teases. Same as the Salvager brute is not supposed to be beaten with lust damage, but physical damage.
This is intentional game design. This way the player has to use both combat options and learn that some enemies are easier to beat with either health damage or lust damage.

I've found Tease damage to be unreliable, like I said. Either her 'Likes' don't line up with what Steele actually has, or Steele's Libido is too low to have much impact.
She also becomes laughably easy once you have an Arc Sledgehammer or Ancient Laser Rifle. Or if Steele is a Tech Specialist, which starts with a Scoped Pistol (she's weak to Burning).
It may be intentional, but I think she could use another pass or two before it becomes 'good'.
