Would an armor-based 'shield' be feasible?

Now, what do I mean by this? I mean a protective outer layer akin to the armor of the female Sydian or the Crystal Goos.

Firstly like armored enemies the shield text would switch to armor on the UI?

Secondly, techspecialists wouldn't give these outer layers a bonus as they aren't energy based, nor would they power a drone.

Thirdly, they'd either function similarly to the Sydian and essentially give more defense but shatter away with hits, or they'd function like shields but without the inherent weakness to electricity. Either way the 'shield defense' stat would be considerably higher than what tech specialist shields provide and possibly include decent Fortification as a stat to enhance the wearer's HP when blasts go through.

Fourth they wouldn't trigger the items that explode upon shield dropping to zero.

With that out of the way, how would this work on the tech level? How would one wear/use this? I have some ideas.

1. Nanites released from a pack on your belt create a layer over your armor to form a phalanx, each nanite having an octagonal shield that would match with its neighbour to defend from incoming damage, repairing themselves in the pack with raw material stocked inside or the remains of destroyed units. Doublewrapped in armor.

2. A set of nanites or a dispersion nozzle that hoses you down with Ganrael goo which dries and solidifies but in a more efficient and uniform fashion as opposed to the item we shatter and cover ourselves in. The nozzle would repair the armor as necessary like a spraybrush.

3. Gray-goo shapeshift allowing one to make use of our favorite gooey bimbo, but still wear traditional armor. She forms over us as a layer instead of a clothing option. Maybe a higher level unlock?

With a few of my brain children on display I'll look at the most immediate question. Why make a shield a tech specialist won't use? Because I think there should be some specialist gear, that fills different sci-fi niches, because a techie could still use it to combat electric foes, and because I'm a merc main who if given the option to triple down on armor and be incapable of wearing a shield I 200% would as low-tech but powerful is my jam. I'm the type of person who would use Fallout 4 raider gear and wishes the cobbled together pirate skins in Stellaris were a legit option.

Another thing that comes to mind is that instead of the instant recovery afforded to regular shields when out of combat they'd repair over time to account for the fact they aren't energy based.

Those are my idea pitches and thoughts, I'm ready for feedback and suggestions or the like. How much of this is impossible?

That's kinda the opposite of what I am suggesting. There are several armors in the game that give shields through generators or the like, I am suggesting a shield that isn't energy based but is instead, as stated, akin to damageable armor.

The Titan Armor from the latest Deus Ex game is another example of what is in mind.

I suppose the easiest way to do that is to include actual shields, you know, physical shields, that occupy the shield generator slot. Probably they'll have insanely high points before they break but the damage to the shield is permanent until you pay a lot to have that advanced space metal shield patched up, and if it completely breaks you'll really have to pay out of your ass to repair it.
