New Release: Version 0.102!

The latest build nearly wraps up the alternative path for the siege--the route where, if Mercy isn't confident in the cove's strength, she sends for backup and tries to hold the choke until help arrives.

There are a few little bumps to smooth over for next week, but then we're sailing on ahead with new content and leaving the cove behind once more! I, for one, will be grateful for the change of scenery and to be finished with this exceedingly complicated event, haha.

  • Improved and expanded the Moon & Elijah art
  • Added new “stall for time” portion in the cove residential area with a lot of new dialogue
  • Added the “stall for time” siege, including battles where you hold the choke point as Marlan, Hallie, Dalkon, Fukuro and Franz
  • Added a new short cutscene on Bell’s deck
  • Added new dialogue to some residents after the “stall for time” siege, and made some of the dialogue from head-on attack apply for both paths
  • All members of the ship’s crew will be absent from the cove after the strategy meeting if the “stall for time” path is chosen
  • Fixed an issue where Moondrop was declassified as magic and removed from Orus’s list of spells

New Release: v0.103!

Hello, everyone!

This patch puts the whole cove siege section to bed, adding a lot of new scenes and updating the dialogue for all the members of the cove, and tweaking/improving some of the scenes during the siege itself. Plus, there are some relatively important bug fixes thrown in for good measure.

For now, I'm ready to move on and tackle what comes next, but in the future I'll probably come back to this section and flesh out a few more details, like unique dialogue for every possible member of the cove who didn't make it, and little on-screen effects to ramp up the drama when the general shows up.

As for what comes next: Mercy has to rush around, making good on her alliances, finishing her preparations and bolstering the cove's strength for Oldlight's return. Plus, there are still a few mysteries to solve, like the idols and whatever happened to Friedhilda.

We hope you're as excited to see where it all goes as we are.

  • Added Bell’s arrival scene (Stall route)

  • Fixed an issue where Elijah could repeat dialogue automatically after the siege

  • Revised a few lines of dialogue in Shiveworth

Weekly & Alpha Release: v0.104!

Hi everyone! Version 0.104 is uploaded for weekly and alpha patrons! Thanks for your patience and thanks for playing our game.

We have a couple of pretty cool new systems being implemented this week, and the longest scene written to date, which had to be broken into three separate portions since it's a bit of a slow burn before it really gets cooking.

We've also begun trying to address the world changes for chapter 9, but as you can imagine, that's a big project in and of itself and will take a while to iron out.

Version 0.104 - 10-18-2019
  • Added a new NSFW scene (M/F, Dom/Sub, Mature)
  • Bell’s arrival to the cove has been added to the siege route, and a new scene with Tafo was added
  • Added a 5th level to the dorms (WIP)
  • Added a new multi-part cove sequence building up to the new NSFW scene
  • Adjusted essence magic for better balance and synergy
  • Adjusted classes and enemy resistances to reflect new simplified magic resistance chain: earth > thunder > water > fire > ice > earth (light and dark counter each other, governed by moon and night, respectively)
  • Added new spell effects and made some spells negate certain status afflictions based on the new resistance chain (earth negates paralyze, thunder negates drowned, water negates burns, fire negates chilled/frozen, ice negates dizzy/disoriented). Additionally, if a spell is used on a target afflicted by the state it negates, the spell’s damage is amplified.
  • Updated the library to contain all missing NSFW scenes
  • You can now leave the cove in chapter IX after discussing the Emerald Flats with Marlan (Ch. IX world is WIP)
  • Fixed an issue where Fukuro would show up with Marlan instead of Sabal
  • Fixed some text alignment issues
  • Fixed some portrait alignment issues
  • Franz, the Carvannah refugees, Sigrun & co., the Danforth Crook bandits are all gone from their respective places in the world starting in chapter IX if not recruited

New Release: Version 0.105!

Hi Nym, here!

Spent a lot of time this week really fleshing out the essence journal, adding a full-detail page for every spell in the game. I'll be doing the same for the weapon skill journal soon, but I ran out of time this week.

Besides just the spellbook, I've added a number of brand new spells to the game, continuing the recent trend of trying to add depth and synergy to the game's magic system for those people out there like myself who love experimenting with different build combinations.

There's other little tidbits here and there, but I'll let the patch notes handle the rest and just say thanks for playing, as always, and I hope you're looking forward to a brand new area coming next week.

Version 0.105 - 10-25-2019

  • Completely overhauled the essence magic journal, adding a full detailed page for every individual spell.
  • 6 Brand new spells were added to the 2nd and 3rd tier of Eva’s workspace!
  • Hawk’s Keep is abandoned in Chapter IX and all the Lions have moved on (but maybe someone else has moved in…?)
  • Danforth Crook has been updated slightly for chapter IX. Marilea is no longer recruitable and the jobs around the farm are already taken care of, so you won’t be asked for help.
  • The basement key from Danforth can be retrieved in chapter IX even if the bandits weren’t recruited, and Sabal can still be recruited
  • If Colette wasn’t recruited in Chapter VIII, you have another chance to recruit her in chapter IX
  • Flame Cultist added to Fogsborough Ch. IX (requires having found her previously)
  • Attack-all spell animations have been improved for fewer cut-offs and better screen alignment, so it doesn’t look like allies are caught in the attacks
  • Emerald Oasis added to the overworld and world map
  • Added new dialogue with Captain Bell, discussing the plans for departure. Mercy no longer leave the cove in Ch. IX until after this dialogue occurs
  • Qel can now land at the Emerald Oasis, though it can’t be accessed until Ch. IX
  • Fixed an issue where the bird cage image overlay had a tile graphic error
  • Mining nodes in Esterholt now correctly show the coat portrait
  • Fixed a cutscene in the White Rat where Mercy’s sprite wasn’t correctly shown as sleeping

Hey everyone!

There are several new areas and a lot of new cutscenes this week, but the biggest change is also the most subtle: a total overhaul of all the hidden calculations behind the fishing system. It doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot on the casual user's end, but it cleans the whole thing up a lot for me and makes a few improvements in the process.

It's fun to be working on fresh new content again, since I was starting to get tired of the cove events. Look forward to a whole lot more next week!

  • Added the Temple of the Burning Stone (WIP)

  • Overhauled the fishing system. Your Luck now directly affects what fish you will find in addition to whether you catch a fish. Your line can no longer break unless you land a fish. Increased the odds of finding regionally-specific fish. (Each time you cast, a random number is rolled between 1 and 400. Mercy's Luck stat is then added to the total. When using a Lure, Mercy's Luck is tripled. If the resulting number is higher than 200, something is hooked.)
  • Revised the snowy cliff tiles around Esterholt and Fogsborough to be less blocky and allow passability underneath
  • Added some new fishable items
  • Fixed some portrait issues in Carvannah
  • Fixed some repeating animation issues

New Weekly & Alpha Release: v0.108!

Hellooooooo, and thanks for joining us for another new release! We focused a lot on revisions and improvements this week, including portraits, weapon skill books, and in many cases, the skills themselves.

The long quest chain from Fogsborough to Fort Wilkes to New Light has finally concluded, and a number of new friends can be made along the way. I've also begun work on a cool new area called Emerald Flats, but that isn't quite ready for exploration yet. You can look forward to seeing some of that next week.

This week has been all about mapping out the brand new area, Emerald Flats. It's a big, spacious town tucked away in a forest, and it's going to end up being probably the largest & most populated area since Carvannah.

It's already quite big! Next week, we start in on the interior areas and finish populating the town with all the new NPCs. This might be the last new town the game gets before we start closing in on the finale, so we hope you like it!

Happy Holidays! Version 0.113 Released!

Hi everyone, here is the final build before the holidays, and the second-to-last build of the decade.

The hell world of the past few weeks is finally calming, and things are beginning to resemble normalcy again just in time for the holidays. We'll be taking a couple of days off to relax for Christmas, but fear not: there will still be a new release next Friday.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the new stuff! Emerald Flats is nearly complete. The only thing left is to flesh out a few more side-quests and add in a bit of extra content, and we'll be moving on with the story.

New Year, New Build: v0.115!

Hey everyone, happy 2020. This week's build finally cut up a bunch more of our voice actress's monologue bits for Mercy and adds them in, which is a lot more work getting right than it sounds, but definitely worth it.

She does a great job with Mercy, and I'm looking forward to getting the rest of the game voiced up.

Beyond that, I fixed a bunch of bugs and updated the cove with new, post-Emerald Flats dialogue. This is getting more and more time-consuming as the cove keeps growing and adding new people, but it really feels essential to making the cove feel "alive" and I don't mind doing it.

You'll notice that a lot of people start hinting at errands or projects they'd like to attempt before it all goes down, and this chapter is going to be Mercy's last chance to get all her unfinished business concluded, so there are a lot of threads to start tying off.

Next week, we're gonna be doing a lot of tying. Hope you look forward to it.

New Weekly & Alpha: v0.116!

Hi everyone!

Last week, I mentioned we would start tying off loose ends this week, and that's what I've been working on.

We have a lot of returning old faces you can touch base with again, many of whom can be recruited depending on your choices up to now. Next week there will be more of the same, with Chapter 9 will be wrapping up very soon. Then I'll be getting started on the "final" chapter!

  • Depending on your actions until now and a number of different variables, the amount of reinforcements from Mar’Liore will vary drastically. The results of all that is finally tallied, though not all of it will be revealed immediately.
  • It is now possible for Bennie (new character), Monday (new character), Lara, Kylie and Kobe Jones to join the reinforcements from Mar’Liore, depending on your actions until now. They will also appear in the cove if recruited.
  • Added a new cutscene with Marlan and Petrova
  • Added a new cutscene with all the new arrivals in the cove
  • If the red moth ejderha was encountered in Grey Clarion, it will appear again at the cove at the end of Ch. IX

New Weekly Release: v0.119!

Hi everyone! Some spoilers in this post, so read ahead at your own risk.

It's a somewhat contained build this week on account of all the post-launch work that accompanies a new public build and the subsequent hotfixes, but a lot of new dialogue and characters have been added to the cove and I've begun the tedious (but admittedly also kind of fun?) labor of preparing a big climactic battle.

If you've already done the first siege, where you assign members of your cove to various roles, then imagine that again but on steroids, with more stats, many more members of the cove to choose from, and a much more elaborate and larger-scale battle plan.

This part is going to take a while... but I'm hoping it does all your choices and hard work so far justice, eventually.

New Release: v0.120!

We're looking really clean and stable right now, and I'm feeling good about the latest releases, which is great because all that smooth sailing is about to CRASH AND BURN, starting next week.

Because, folks.... we're finally here. The big moment of truth. The ultimate showdown (of ultimate destiny). Everything that you've been building towards is all preparing to converge right now, and it is not going to be a smooth process with easy-to-release builds in between.

I'm going to keep my head down for now and keep grinding just to see where we end up next week, but something tells me it might not be worth releasing until it's all playable.

On the other hand, it's probably going to need a lot of playtesting. We'll just have to see where I'm at with it all as we go and play it by ear.

Whatever happens... thanks for hanging in there.

As for the release right this moment, I'm giving you everything that's functional, just before the shit all hits the fan. There are some nice new features baked into this build that I think will make a lot of people happy.

  • Added a new boss encounter
  • Added a new side-quest (contingent on your choices so far)
  • You can now skip right to Mercy room or Beatrix’s office from the Dorms entrance (and visiting Beatrix heals you automatically)
  • You can now interact with the bed in Beatrix’s office, and Beatrix will heal your injuries.
  • Added more new dialogue to the cove
  • Fixed an issue where Beatrix could appear in Ch. IX even if she had died in the siege
  • Fixed some passability issues
  • Fixed an issue where Captain Bell could remain in the cove after leaving for Emerald Flats

New Weekly & Alpha Release: v0.121!

Hey everyone!

This has been an excruciatingly time-consuming and complicated build to get out, but I'm very pleased to announce that the hard part is finally over and we're back to the more exciting stuff!

The new system developed for assigning units during the coming battle is vastly more sophisticated than the iteration from the previous siege, to say nothing of the fact that there are twice as many people now, so development on that created a lot of new challenges. I hope it works well, and I hope people don't find it too laborious to assign so many different roles, haha.

Aside from the big system implementation, we also wrapped up a few important plot-points and had time to squeeze in a brand new sex scene.

Next week's build is going to be all about diving into battle... so I hope everyone's ready!

  • Added a new meeting sequence where the cove gathers to go over the battle plans

  • Added the unit assignment system for the final battle, allowing Mercy to assign everyone in the cove a role, as well as the reinforcements, however desired. The scores are calculated now but won’t be revealed until later

  • Fixed some Orus-overlap issues

New Release: v0.122!

Hey folks, this week we got a lot of new cutscenes with multiple branching paths wrapped up, and I plan to flesh them out a little further next week.

Also added the big packed-up final cove area, you'll be able to chat with everyone in the cove one last time before the big day, and in a lot of cases, get a bunch of new backstory on your fellow residents.

This is a WIP for now, going to take a whole lot of work to squeeze everyone in now that there are something like 80 possible members.

New Release: v0.123! Whoa!

Hey everyone!

We've got another new weekly build for you, this time with a comfortable blend of secret, invisible math and much more interesting, perfectly visible new character dialogue.

The cove is a crowded place now, and adding everyone in to the new areas and giving so many characters the chance to go deeper into their backstories was fun and rewarding, but also time-consuming!

Not much to say about the build beyond that. Things are shaping up, and we're chipping away at the big pieces little by little.

New Release: Version 0.124!!!

Hey everyone! We're back again with a cool new release, featuring a surprise new WIP area I'm excited to share.

It's been a lot of work on sprites and tiles this week for the mapping, but I mostly like how it came out in the end and I'm excited to keep building on this area further, since it's interesting and reveals a lot of new lore.

We'll be back next week, so stay safe in the meantime, hunker down with Daughter of Essence, and for God's sake, wash your hands often and thoroughly.

  • Fixed an issue where loading a game in some interior areas wouldn’t correctly play the region’s BGM or BGS

  • Giantslayer damage ticks now have an animation to make it more obvious

New Release: The Fixening (v0.126)

Well, I survived the dreaded corona.

Thanks to everyone for the patience and support--I didn't get bad enough to go to the hospital, but I was pretty out of commission for a week and change. Fortunately, I'm feeling better and was able to get some important work done this week, finally wrapping up all the behind-the-scenes math and tallying for the siege outcome.

It was tricky, because the siege is a surprisingly complex system:

First, it tallies up your unit scores, which are decided both by your choices of unit composition, any upgrades they had, and any reinforcements you give them.

Then, it talles up Oldlight's unit scores in opposition to your own. This is decided by all manner of different variables and choices made throughout the game, so it's not just a fixed value.

And lastly, it pits all these opposing values against each other in a fairly sophisticated way, with a lot of different scores spilling over into different categories as reinforcements or gaps in defense, etc.

The final effort has been measuring the degrees of success or failure for these values and determining what that means for the final result: who lives, who dies, whether you win or lose, and how good or bad things turn out for everyone in the end.

I'm doing a ton of work on making it feel dynamic, because it's the culmination of years of planning and preparation not just from me, but also for anyone following along with the story expecting some sort of payout for their choices.

  • Finished tallying Oldlight’s total force strength based on choices made up til now
  • Pitted yours and Oldlight’s scores together for the final battle results (WIP)
  • Added the post-siege battlefield maps (WIP)
  • Slightly tweaked some cove residents’ stats for better aptitude for at least one task
  • Fixed a file reference issue in the Carvannah Aqueducts
  • Implemented a new system to track which residents of the cove fall during the siege based on their resilience and the final tallies of the unit to which they were assigned.
  • Made a change to the extra reinforcements to the main force so that they are correctly tracked in the battle’s aftermath (this change won’t take effect for saves past the unit selection portion, meaning some residents could inadvertently dodge death).

Still Clinging to Life (New Release! v0.127)

Hi everyone, apologies for updates being a little spotty of late. I've been up and down with what the doctors assume is a bad case of Coronavirus, though they aren't testing people my age. So I spoke too soon about having a mild version.

But when I'm up, I can usually squeeze in a little time to get some work done. As luck would have it, I've been up for the past couple of days and able to make some more progress.

Hopefully things stay on the up-and-up, but I've been burned by that hope before so I'm taking things one day at a time. Hope you like the new build, and I hope to see you soon!

New Weekly Build: v0.128!

Hi folks, I wanted to get this weekly build out even though it's not gigantic, primarily because it fixes some pretty tricky issues. It's uploading now!

An update health-wise, I'm still under the weather but I still have good days and bad days. I've finally been tested for COVID after 5 weeks of complaining and the tests came back negative, which is partly good and partly nerve-wracking, because now I have to twiddle my thumbs and wait for all the other non-coronavirus blood tests to come in to see if it's something else more serious.

Fingers crossed it's just a weird one-off infection, and my "good days" become more and more normal and the bad days less frequent.

We're going to get over this finish line, though, even if I have to crawl over it. Thanks for taking this journey with me while the world crumbles around us.

New Weekly & Alpha Build: v0.129!

Hi everyone, I am pleased to report some improvement in my condition this week, accompanied by some blessed progress on the various branching paths that make up the game's "endings."

Presently, there are 7 different major divergences after the siege, most of which lead to an earlier conclusion to the journey than some of the other, more "successful" routes. Within some of these 7 paths is an impossibly large number of more subtle variants based on your choices over the course of the game and your level of preparedness for the battle.

There's a lot of content packed in here, but the caveat to all this exciting news is... most of you will never see 95% of it. After all, you can only experience one single outcome at a time!

Making so many branching outcomes is time-consuming business, and coupled with serious illness, it's been a hell of a month for development.
