Noob question: Is TITS's main story actually time-based?

Simply put: If I wait around and do sidequests and other stuff for too long, does my character eventually lose the inheritance to the cousin? Do I have to progress through the main story quickly in order to actually get it?

I haven't yet played far enough through the game to even leave the first station. I've looked on the wiki, in the forums, and even in a review or two of the game, and nothing has answered this question for me. They all just say that you have to get your inheritance "before your cousin." However, in most games, especially role-players, time doesn't really matter, and you can do as many sidequests as you want before doing the main story, even if it's something like "Stop [antagonist] from detonating the nuke"

I just want to make sure that I can feel free to do the main story whenever I feel like it before I get too far and potentially screw it up.

Time does not matter, you could let years of in-game time go by and your cousin would still be wandering around the jungle, just waiting for you to arrive so that he/she can swipe it from you. Explore without worry!

Thank you for the quick and friendly response! I'll probably start actually playing it tomorrow

True but to unlock all the content up to Myrellion you gotta do the probes on Mhenga and Tarkus :(

While I understand some developer wish to instill a sense of urgency to their game, I can't help but feel time constraints on certain games are a total boner-killer.

This is yet another reason why I enjoy this game: we're allowed to wander around and explore without fear of a game over (unless you kick off a time restricted quest of course).

Turn-based games and time limits don't really go well together. I was getting worried when I saw the title, thinking maybe I have missed something but now I am happy it's not the case :)

When I first started playing this back in the day I was really worried that there was a time limit. On one hand I am glad that there isn't one, you get to sit back and enjoy everything the game has to offer, but on the other hand you also kinda lose something by taking away the urgency. I guess you can always play while pretending you only have a certain amount of time, or only give yourself a specific number of days to get to each probe? Hmm.

Maybe when they finish they can add a Hardcore mode, like in Fallout; where you have to eat, sleep, and drink at regular intervals or suffer negative effects, and death is permanent.

Weeeell, death IS permanent, when you die, you die. Game over, load a previous save.

What you mean is that death deletes the save and you have to start over?

+ Yeah, I wouldn't like a hardcore mode, I'd rather like the team to focus on CoC 2 or another game when they finish this one, idk.

Having a time limit in a game makes it easier to force replayability. If you can do everything the first time through, then there is little inclination to play through again (unless you want to rewatch/read your favorite cutscenes again). But if you can't get everything the first time, then you may want to go back to experience all the things you missed.

Of course that can also turn people away. If someone has a completionist urge but they have to replay a 40+ hour game from the beginning each time they want to get something new, they may feel like it would be too much of a hassle.

With a NG+, new bits of story can be sprinkled throughout the game. Sometimes to the point of it feeling like an entirely new game.

Having a sense of urgency is...a weird topic in this game. There are a few cases where a time limit is set in this game, but only one that I can think of ties into the main quest of the game, and even then only indirectly. There is a lot to explore in this game but at the same time, there is a main quest that tells you you're in a race against someone. It's kind of telling you to go fast and slow down at the same time. And you can't really have a sense of urgency in this game because if you're pregnant and go into labor during the final boss, what happens then? Do you get carted off with your baby to the nursery? Or do you have the kid right then and there while you're performing your level 20 reverse-counter-dodge-flips to evade the bad guy's anti-matter gravity mass accelerator drive cannon (feel free to insert any other adjectives into the weapon name to make it sound appropriate for end game content)?
There needs to be a time limit, but at the same time there can't be one. If there were maybe a reason for there to be no sense of urgency despite it being a race (for example you have a key item that is needed to unlock a specific door or activates the end game portal that the final probe is behind so that even if Jack/Jill has collected all the probes but one, they have to wait for another event to occur before they get a chance at obtaining the last probe. Basically, I think there should only be a sense of urgency for the race to get the last probe. All other probes can just be obtained whenever.

There is one mission that's time-based, but it's in-game time, and you have plenty of it. I think it's done more so that you can't stop and rest in the middle of what's supposed to be a dangerous area. The game gives you a big warning when the clock starts, though.

There is a time limit of around four in-game hours when you go to Tarkus and go through that Pirate infested area where they are trying to detonate a bomb. I think that is all.

Also I don't like overall time limits. There is too much to do to impose an overall time limit.

There is another case when PC can... miss the next stage of subquest aside intentionaly blowing up Tarkus. :allears:

And one more at anthill :catte: but not sure if it actualy time-limited event or not (I never tried to fail it since reward was quite tempting).

You mean Saendra Quest 2? I'm pretty sure that if you don't respond to Saen's email in time you lose her forever to the Black Void. :(

Time is really only a factor when it comes to certain events triggering after a specific amount of days since you triggered it's prerequisite. Other than that, no, the actual days do not matter. You could play for thousands and thousands of years, and nothing around you would change.
