New to the game, haven't started playing yet, and not sure where to start for build crafting. I like to plan my builds before I start. What does each class excel at? What equipment should I be going for?
I typically like summoner builds, not sure if that's possible here.

Any help is appreciated.

Okay so I'll try to basically split the 5 classes to their basic gimmicks. Keep in mind the class of the skills you can use doesn't really matter since you can go to a Trainer and get that Class's skill whenever you want.

Warrior: Warrior either allows you to be the tank of the party using a shield: drawing agro and protecting your party; or it allows you to be a damage dealer: hitting enemies with strong melee abilities while still being hard to kill.

Thief: Thief is more debuffing and burst oriented compared to the Warrior. It has a lot of basic but strong abilites: most of them being single target. You will want to either be afflicting a lot of debuffs on the enemies or have one of your other party members do it for you.

Black Mage: Black Mage is AoE and Burst orriented. It's great for dealing with packs of enemies but lacks good Dps options until late game. If there was a premier summoner class this would be it, but summoner a playstyle isn't exactly bound to a class.

White Mage: White Mage is about healing your party and preventing them from taking damage.

Charmer is both the buffer class and the tease class. You can either use strong buffs to turn your teammates or yourself into menaces or use tease attacks to take down your opponents in an untraditional way. Keep in mind while some enemies are weak to teases some enemies are completely immune to it.

This is a very cursory explanation to all the classes. If you want to learn more you should probably check out the wiki.

Okay my experience with Kineticist is very little so I won't write about that.

On the topic of summoners: there isn't really a summoner class although there is techincally a summon ability for pure endgame for now. Maybe there will be something similar added later.

Mercenaries prefer non energy weapons and Don't care all that much about shields. They naturally gain Kinetic and Fire resistance through perks when leveling and they gain the ability to regen a large percent of their health every combat when level 5. Ranged Mercenary have the ability Rapid Fire which allows them to make 3+1 ranged attacks every turn. They prefer guns with bonus hit rate and good base damage. Don't use things with reduced accuracy.

Melee Mercenary are even more simple. Power Strike allows you to do a singe melee attack with double damage so use weapons with high base damage. Riposte gives a lot of evasion when you hit with a melee weapon so you can choose to lean into that too.

Smugglers have one of the best abilities in the game with Stealth Field and they have the ability to regain energy every combat so you can spam this ability. As a Smuggler most of your damage will come from your Level 3 perk, doing bonus damage to debuffed enemies with ranged/melee attacks depending on the perk you choose. You can use weapons that debuff enemies but I wouldn't say they are a necessity with being able to use Flashbang or Low Blow. For Smugglers the difference between ranged and melee doesn't matter much outside of weapon choice.

Tech Specialist value Intelligence above all other stats. They have large shields but low health and defense. They have a bonus to energy weapons and have a perk to regain most of their shield every combat. Ranged Techie's damage comes from mostly Overcharge ability which deals double ranged damage for low energy.

Melee Techies have the ability Charge Weapon which for 15 energy grants you bonus Electric damage on your melee weapons for the rest of the combat. If you are willing to cheese I'd say melee Techie is the strongest playstyle ingame.

Kineticist, Mercenary, Smuggler, Tech Specialist.

Heavy Weapons/Low Tech Solutions & Gun Tweaks/Weapon Tweaks bonus damage is calculated from base weapon damage, so don't feel like you can't use a weapon they don't apply to. Personally, I think Flags are more important than raw damage. Stun Chance, especially. Overcharge does require an Energy weapon.

Closest thing to a Summoner build is Drone Tech. There was supposed to be a rework to make Accessory Drones creatures in combat, but I don't know if it's still planned. Some Drones are bugged and get the bonus damage from Charge Weapon.

General tips.
