Hey so I've played COC2 a bit in the past but that was like 5 or 6 years ago and I'm trying to get back into the game.

Don't really know what build I want to go with but I know for a fact I want Cait and Ryn in my party, so any help would be great.

You've really missed a lot if the last time you've played is that long ago. Companions have multiple loadouts or "sets" that can fill most roles (Ryn has a tankish one for example and Cait gets a few more damage oriented ones) so...it's dealer's choice with what you want to do. More companions and options for them leave things more open to compliment most play styles imo

So if I go with a thief would witch gear Cait with warrior queen or glacial guard Ryn be a good comp? and also are there any abilities or gear that's basically a must have on a thief?

Glacial guard works really well with thief, it applies lots of debuffs which then increase the thief's attack damage. Any melee dps build is going to want to have whirlwind/cleave from warrior trainers even if you are playing a thief.

Ok and what should I be looking out for in term of equipment and skills? I'm assuming stuff that boosts evasion and crit in some way?

crit and eva yes, holy or storm damage is good as few enemies resist them until the later parts of the games. Kitsune den should have equipment that's good for thief builds though I usually main mage so I'm not sure if my knowledge is outdated regarding thief builds or not

Respecs are pretty cheap, so don't be afraid to fuck around and experiment with builds. As for gear, yeah, evasion and crit. Abilties, you want anything that stacks Concealment or applies debuffs. Thieves play around the Twist the Knife passive (extra damage vs debuffed targets). You can also get companions to apply debuffs for you.
